Edwin is the fourth child in a family of six. His parents are local farmers who grow maize for food. His father works at the nearby maize mill to earn some money for his family's basic necessities. Edwin is the only one amongst his brothers and sisters that has been able to continue his education. Edwin's three brothers left school because their parents were unable to afford paying for their secondary school fees. Edwin's mother makes and sells necklaces to tourists which generates some money. The money is only used to buy some food and clothes. Despite his interest in education, it seemed likely that Edwin would, too, have to leave school, get married and become a subsistence farmer. After Edwin graduated from standard eight, the School Management Committee, Teachers, Parents/Teachers Association and H.E.L.P Malawi conducted an assessment to figure out which students would be eligible for scholarship. Edwin was selected based on the financial need of his family and the interest that he showed in continuing his education. "I will now have an opportunity to join the Malawi Defense Force⦠the job of my dream."

Lukas aspires to be a doctor. Everyday, Lukas walks an hour to get to school, a journey he believes is completely worth making in exchange for an education. At Lugalo, he takes biology, his favorite subject. Although Lukas lives his life without a father and has to walk over one kilometer to access a water source, he is not discouraged and instead highly motivated to make a better life for himself by going to school.
