Haji's mother died in 2002 after suffering for a long time from an illness. Haji was told that his father was a driver, but he has not been seen since Haji's mother's death. Haji, his younger sister, and younger brother now live with their grandmother, who has a small farm where she cultivates corn, cabbage, and beans. Due to her old age and occasional droughts, Haji's grandmother is sometimes unable to produce any crops. In primary school, Haji sold fruits along the road after school to pay for his exercise books.
