About

Congxia is currently in 8th grade, and has often fallen ill since she was little. Her family would treat these sicknesses as mere common colds. Only when Congxia reached the age of 11 did her family find out that her frequent illnesses were due to her having congenital heart disease. But because the family had no money to treat her condition, Congxia was left untreated until the age of 17. Only in April this year did her family find out about Little Red Scarf, and she was successfully operated on. Now she finally has a healthy heart. It is Congxia's dream to be able to walk like a normal person; because she has clubbed feet, Congxia is unable to stretch her feet, which strongly influences her ability to walk. There are four people in Congxia's family. Her entire family's income is reliant on her father's job as a stone smasher; her mother has bone spurs in both her feet and as such is only able to walk for short periods at a time. Because of the family's financial situation, she cannot afford to have her feet treated, and must instead rely on painkillers. However, the painkillers' side effects are severe, and have led to her mother's two hands becoming crooked. Congxia's mother's medical expenses cost the family 10,000 RMB a year, yet her father's job only earns him 15,000 RMB a year.

Dear aunts and uncles:
How are you these days? My name is Gan Congxia. My home is in the country of the town called Yongdeng in Gansu province where the traffic is not convenient. My family have 4 members, I, my parents and my brother. When I was 11 years old, I was diagnosed with congenital heart disease. However, my family was too poor to support my expense for the operation because my mother has a long illness which always needs medicine to keep cure and the only income support our life is from my father who hit the stone from the hills. The operation expense need all of my families save our expense, but it is still far from enough. I was nearly desperate for myself, and even worse, I have suffered clubfoot which made me can not walk as others. If I want to treat the clubfoot, I must cure the congenital heart disease first. My dream is to walk as others and never suffer the different eyes from others. I am also a girl who wants to be a beautiful girl. Under the help of Little Red Scarf this year, I finish my operation of heart disease successfully and now get a great recovery. I can go back to the school and I am Grade 2 in the middle school. The uncles and aunties from LRS also donate the student fees to me. Although I can not walk as others until now, with the concern of LRS, I still feel that there are full of hopes in my life. Here I represent the family to to say Thank you to you. Thanks for the kind people’s help to give me the opportunity to have a healthy body and to go back to school. I will study hard to be a person who will be valuable for the society and I will help more people as all of you.

Best Regards,
Gan Congxia
