About

I am Kpetermeni T. Siakor, a Liberian who is passionate about enabling technologies and how they are used to help people help themselves. I know technology has an incredible opportunity to advance Liberia. For the past few years, I have worked on numerous tech projects in Liberia including disaster relief tracking with Ushahidi, the Ministry of Finance and my side project of sharing IT education through open courseware. Given University of Liberia does not offer any computer science courses and I don't have the funds to study abroad, I started to look for other ways to learn. After discovering open courseware online, I was so surprised this information was free but with only satellite internet, its expensive and slow. I started downloading these videos and handing them out, showing them as a class, sharing them with professors and generally spreading the word about technology. My goal is to get a Computer Science degree so I can return to Liberia to setup a not-for-profit technology company that focuses on providing enabling technologies and access to world-class training to Liberians. The enabling technologies comprise of, but not limited to telecommunication, Internet, virtualization, and open source software. The training component shall focus on the providing accessibility and promoting the use of high quality open courseware.

Hello Kpetermeni,

Wishing you a happy holidays and New Year!!

Debbie
Hi Everyone,

I can't believe it's already my birthday. Time does fly, especially when exciting things are going on around you. These past months have been indeed exciting!

Looking back at the just ended semester, I am convinced that I made the right decision to attend Ashesi. And I am grateful for your assistance in making this possible. Here are some highlights:

1. I had three opportunities to present a new social network (AshCon) I'm working on. It has aroused keen interest among students, faculty and administration. In fact, Dr. Awuah, the university president, has offered to buy a server to host the application once it is ready to roll. What AshCon does is that it brings the social and academic lives of students and faculty to one platform that is largely Internet independent. It acts as a "social intranet" that also hosts open courseware locally. AshCon was started in response to the persistent disruptions to an already lean campus Internet connection. I am now building a core team of students with advice from some faculty members. Since working offline is at the heart of AshCon, it is not available outside campus for now.

2. I took part in a career fair competition on campus and came in first place! I was offered an internship immediately from the sponsoring company, Unilever, with other offers from three local tech companies. I was also given a laptop and GHC 500.00 for my prize.
3. For a part of the semester, I have been teaching ninth graders ICT as they prepare for their national exams. They have just written the national exams and we await the results. Fingers crossed.

4. I was also selected as one of three academic representatives for my year group. In this capacity, I seek to help all members of my class pass to the next semester through innovative programs, mentoring, tutoring, and of course using open courseware. As you may imagine, this role requires that I maintain a strong academic performance throughout my tenure and I'm working on it.

5. Finally, our grades have been processed. And I came out with a 3.75 on a 4.0 scale.

Again, all these things wouldn't have been possible without your kind involvement.

What are your thoughts on any of these?

Best,

Kpetermeni
