Student Bio
Fangdi was born into a family of seven. At the age of six months, she was diagnosed with congenital heart disease. Having been hospitalized with pneumonia at the time, her family thought that it was purely just a problem with her lung. However, the county hospital soon diagnosed her with congenital heart disease. Fangdi’s home is located in an extremely remote area, and requires about 9 hours and 3 transfers before she can reach Lanzhou, the provincial capital. Because of these travel difficulties, as well as her family’s lack of funds, Fangdi’s illness has been left untreated for 15 years. Earlier this year, her teacher recommended Fangdi to take time out from school as her physical condition was so poor that the school was afraid for her safety. This is not the first time her illness had interrupted her studies, which is why at 15, Fangdi was in the 2nd grade. She has already lost many opportunities, and should not lose any more. Just as the summer holidays began this year, her father borrowed money from anywhere they could and came to Lanzhou University First Hospital, where they were referred to Little Red Scarf.
Fangdi’s mother suffers from a lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion, and as such cannot work in the fields. Her family spent 5000 RMB last year on her mother’s hospital fees, and she still needs to take medicine regularly. On top of this, the family is 40,000 RMB in debt, and only has Fangdi’s father’s income to rely on for subsistence.
