Field Partner

Kenya Connect's mission is to engage and empower students and teachers to succeed in the 21st century. They do this by providing scholarships to underprivileged students and by breaking down local barriers to education by providing clean water, deworming programs and hand washing stations to schools, offering computer training, including STEM classes to students and teachers, building a culture of reading and strengthening literacy through their mobile library program.

Kenya Connect serves 18,000 students in the rural village of Wamunyu. Families are extremely supportive of education despite 50% of students' families living in extreme poverty. There are currently 34 students supported of which 59% are female and 41% are male.

    Mutheu is the fifth born child from a family of 6 children. Her parents rely on casual jobs to sustain the family. Despite being sent home due to school levies every now and then, she has remained resolved towards achieving her dream of becoming a teacher. Mutheu believes that knowledge is power and she wants to pass it to students to end illiteracy in the rural areas. She also wants to empower students to attain their dream careers and occupations so as to improve their livelihoods. During her free time, she likes to read novels.

    Purity is a jovial and focused girl. She is the first born in a family of two. Her father passed on leaving behind her mother who is ailing from leukemia and unable to perform heavy tasks. Purity enjoys reading. She was Kenya Connect 2020 queen reader having read 264 books in a span of three months. She aspires to be a lawyer to help fight injustices in the country. She strongly believes that hard work never goes unrewarded

    Muthini is the third born in a family of six. Her father is a drunkard and abusive and has neglected the family leaving the mother the only sole bread winner. She currently does casual jobs and the burden of taking care of the large family has overwhelmed her. Muthini is very determined and aggressive to achieve her dreams and become a doctor in future. Doing thorough revision and consulting with her teachers earned her a trump card. She likes reading storybooks and believes that hard work pays and never goes unrewarded. Muthini loves reading storybooks.

    Elijah is the fourth born in a family of five. Their father neglected the family and left his mother the burden of providing for the family. The mother lost her business last year due to Covid-19 and now does casual jobs to support two of her daughters in secondary school. At home Elijah could not study well due to lack of reliable source of light. He used to wake up very early to make it to school in order to utilize the electricity at the school. Managing time well and consulting teachers made him excel in his studies. He aspires to be an aeronautical engineer and making new discoveries. His academic path so far has taught him that every successful person has a painful story. Elijah likes swimming.

    Anna is an uninhibited girl who believes that there is a price for working hard. She is the last born in a family of three; two sisters and one brother. She lives with her parents who are not employed. Anna has been working hard and has always remained focused towards achieving her goal of becoming a lecturer at the university. She wants to end poverty in Kenya by teaching and transferring skills to students at the university in different fields. She is a fan of reading novels about real life situations and how to overcome them.

    Raymond is the firstborn in a family of two. He lives with his mother and grandparents. He has been raised by a single parent, his mother. His mother has been supporting the family through casual jobs. Raymond dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon in future because he wants to help people with mental problems. Also, there are few neurosurgeons in the country. He is very outgoing and enjoys drawing to improve his skills. Despite the challenges he faced, he believed in hard work and emerged as the best student in his school. For sure, hard work never goes unrewarded.
