Field Partner

Abaarso School nurtures the academic, intellectual and character development of promising Somali students so that they can effectively and ethically advance their society. The school accepts students from throughout Somaliland and Somalia. As of 2018, five classes have graduated from Abaarso and over 100 students are continuing their education at leading institutions around the world including Harvard, Yale, Columbia and Rochester. A scholarship ensures that students from all financial backgrounds have an opportunity to attend Abaarso.

Abaarso accepts students from Somaliland and Somalia, regardless of clan or socioeconomic background. 42% of students receive full or partial scholarships. There are currently 273 students enrolled of which 43% are female and 57% are male.
Student selection criteria:
Students are admitted to Abaarso based on merit. Scholarships are provided based on need.
Services provided:
Abaarso is a full-service boarding school where faculty live on campus. Teachers and staff supervise clubs, lead volunteer activities and coach various sports. Abaarso also provides students with college and financial aid counseling.

    Somalia

    Nagma's family includes her mother, father, fifteen sisters, and sixteen brothers. Coming from such a big family, Nagma is most proud of her family. She enjoys spending time with them talking at home and making them proud. At school, her favorite subject is math. Outside of class, Nagma enjoys playing basketball. In the future, she hopes to be a fashion designer.

    Sacdiya is a grade 9 student in the 2016 school year. She enjoys reading inspirational books, playing basketball, and having fun with her classmates. Sacdiya feels herself to have been shy and lacking confidence in the past, but feels that she has overcome her shyness while at school. Growing her confidence and improving her academic performance in school are her greatest accomplishments so far. In the future, Sacdiya hopes to be a cardiologist and to help the poor people in her country.

    Yasir comes from a family of four sisters and two brothers. Yasir is a talented soccer player and math student. Outside of class, Yasir enjoys playing soccer and helping around campus with community service projects. What Yasir likes most about school are the teachers and how well they teach. Being a talented math student, Yasir hopes to be an engineer in the future.

    Muhiim is a fifteen year old from Somaliland. She has eight siblings. Her mother died when she was five, and her father is temporarily employed as an engineer. This is Muhiim’s first year at Abaarso School of Science and Technology, where she’s enrolled as a ninth grader. Without hesitation, she says that she’s grateful for the opportunity to study at Abaarso, and will strive to learn as much as she can. Her favorite subject is science. Although she isn’t certain about what the future holds, she wants to study medicine. When she’s older, she hopes to become a doctor in order to help those in need. She enjoys supporting others, and wants to do her best to improve people’s lives.

    Bushra is from Burao, the second-largest city in Somaliland, located in the Eastern region of the country, where she lives with her father and siblings. She had to leave school in 2014 because her family was unable to pay the tuition, but was given a scholarship and returned in 2015. Despite this gap, Bushra has excelled in English, and writes and speaks at a nearly native level, despite only a few years of instruction in English.

    Khadar is from Hargeisa, and grew up living in the same house as many siblings and cousins. He is one of three members of this family to attend Abaarso, and has sisters in grades 9 and 7. He and his sister first heard of Abaarso because one of their neighbors is an alum. When they saw the school's graduation on Somaliland television, their mother told Khadar and his sister that they should attend Abaarso. Khadar had a very successful 7th grade year at Abaarso, excelling in all subjects but showing particular talent in math. He looks forward to using his talents to one day make it easier for people like him to attend school.
