Field Partner

Abaarso School nurtures the academic, intellectual and character development of promising Somali students so that they can effectively and ethically advance their society. The school accepts students from throughout Somaliland and Somalia. As of 2016, three classes have graduated from Abaarso and over 80 students are continuing their education at leading institutions around the world including Harvard, Yale, Brown and MIT. A scholarship ensures that students from all financial backgrounds have an opportunity to attend Abaarso.

Abaarso accepts students from Somaliland and Somalia, regardless of clan or socioeconomic background. 40% of students receive full or partial scholarships.
Student selection criteria:
Students are admitted to Abaarso based on merit. Scholarships are provided based on need.
Services provided:
Abaarso is a full-service boarding school where faculty live on campus. Teachers and staff supervise clubs, lead volunteer activities and coach sports. Abaarso also provides students with college and financial aid counseling.

    Sagal has four sisters and four brothers. Sagal is most proud to be a student at our school since it is like no other school in her country. What she enjoys most about the school is that the work is challenging, but the community and teachers are very supportive of students succeeding. Her favorite subjects are English, computers, and history. Sagal loves to read and mostly enjoys reading history books. When not reading or studying, Sagal enjoys playing basketball. In the future, Sagal hopes to be a computer programmer.

    Suhaib lives with his mother and four brothers. Suhaib is proud to be a member of our school community and learning new things he would not have learned elsewhere. His favorite classes are Algebra and Chemistry. With his interest in math and chemistry, Suhaib hopes to be a chemical engineer in the future. Outside of class, Suhaib enjoys reading non-fiction books, especially about history, and playing soccer. Suhaib feels it is important to be there for his family and to make them proud.

    Suhayb lives with his five sisters, brother and mother. Suhayb is proud to be attending our school and to be learning English. His greatest accomplishment is learning English. When he first joined our school, he was not able to speak English. Suhayb most enjoys learning. In school, his favorite classes are Algebra, English, and Theatre. Outside of class he enjoys reading mystery or science fiction books, or going over his notes from classes. When not learning something new, Suhayb enjoys playing soccer or being with friends. In the future, Suhayb hopes to be a petroleum engineer.

    Muhyadin is a grade 8 student in the 2016 school year. He has nine sisters and seven brothers. His favorite classes are English, science, and pre-algebra. Muhyadin very much enjoys learning and so is happy to be in school and studying. In his free time, Muhyadin likes to read novels. Being concerned about the future of his country, Muhyadin has many ideas for his future. He would like to be a doctor, since there are few doctors in the country, be president to help lead his people, and open a school to educate the poor.

Now that he is learning English, Suhaib enjoys reading English novels. His favorite classes are math and English. When not reading and studying, Suhaib also enjoys playing soccer. In the future, Suhaib hopes to become a doctor so that he can help people in his country.

    Bilan has six sisters and three brothers. Bilan is proud to be going to the Abaarso School and receiving a quality education. Although learning English is challenging for Bilan, English is one of her favorites classes. She also enjoys social studies, and in her free time likes to read novels and history books. By reading more and practicing English, Bilan hopes to improve her English. Beyond reading, Bilan also enjoys helping around our community whenever there are projects that she can work on. In the future, Bilan hopes to be a doctor.
