Congxia is currently in 8th grade, and has often fallen ill since she was little. Her family would treat these sicknesses as mere common colds. Only when Congxia reached the age of 11 did her family find out that her frequent illnesses were due to her having congenital heart disease. But because the family had no money to treat her condition, Congxia was left untreated until the age of 17. Only in April this year did her family find out about Little Red Scarf, and she was successfully operated on. Now she finally has a healthy heart. It is Congxia's dream to be able to walk like a normal person; because she has clubbed feet, Congxia is unable to stretch her feet, which strongly influences her ability to walk. There are four people in Congxia's family. Her entire family's income is reliant on her father's job as a stone smasher; her mother has bone spurs in both her feet and as such is only able to walk for short periods at a time. Because of the family's financial situation, she cannot afford to have her feet treated, and must instead rely on painkillers. However, the painkillers' side effects are severe, and have led to her mother's two hands becoming crooked. Congxia's mother's medical expenses cost the family 10,000 RMB a year, yet her father's job only earns him 15,000 RMB a year.

Qiming was diagnosed with congenital heart disease when he was 3 years old. However, because of the lack of funds, he was left untreated until the age of 14. On his way to school, Qiming needs to climb a small hill, but because of the severity of his condition, it poses a great challenge to him and always falls behind his classmates. Sometimes he even has to ask his classmates to help him carry his bag. In 2009, his mother lost her life to cirrhosis. In order to afford her treatment, the family took out a high-interest loan of 30,000 RMB. His sister married in 2010, leaving only Qiming and his father to look after each other. His father does carpentry to make a living. Due to an earthquake, the family home has been left in ruins, and Qiming's father only has his daughter's dowry left to repay their debts and repair part of their home.
