After the initial leadership and entrepreneurship trainings at Uplands High School, students decided to start not one, but six business projects through Educate!'s after-school Student Business Club. A frequent problem for students at Uplands was arriving to school with dirty shoes, a dress code violation for which students could be turned away from school. Noting this problem, several clever students in the Business Club started an enterprise to manufacture and sell shoe polish to their classmates. Offering the best solution to the dirty shoe problem, their business became incredibly popular among other students. A second unmet demand was identified by another Business Club group: jam for breakfast toast. Through ventures like these, Educate! students have learned important entrepreneurial skills and many fund their educational expenses.
