About

Eline’s family works hard on their subsistence farm to make ends meet, but often lack the additional resources to pay for school fees. Eline has two siblings: a younger brother and an older sister. While attending secondary school in Form IV, Eline’s sister became pregnant. Eline’s family supported her through the pregnancy and now, Eline’s sister is back attending secondary school. Eline and her siblings are very thankful that their family supports their education despite obstacles. Eline is very close with her family and hopes to create a new future for them through her secondary education.

Dear TSF sponsors,

This is Tunu, the Communications and Development Manager at Orkeeswa School.

As you may be aware, Orkeeswa School reopened in June after we made several changes on campus to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and community.

We are proud to let you know that Eline completed her 12th Grade National Exams last month, reaching a milestone that only 28% of Tanzanians reach nationally, and less than 1% of girls in rural areas. She was also recognized for being the most respectful student in her class. We celebrated with her during a small graduation ceremony held at Orkeeswa School. I’ve included a photo of Eline below from their special day.

We were also able to sit down with Eline and reflect on her time at Orkeeswa. The growth that Eline and her classmates have had over the past seven years, and their impact in their homes and community is truly inspiring.

“Orkeeswa School has been a huge part of my growth. When in 6th grade, I couldn’t speak English and I was so shy! I am not like that anymore. Now I am strong. I have tried new activities and built confidence in myself. I did not understand the importance of education when I began school here, but now I fully understand it.” Eline's Preform 1 reflection

"Graduating 12th grade has been marked as one of my happiest moments. I am really proud of myself. Even my community and family received me in a very proud way with a lot of congratulations. I am now back at school doing a post 12th grade program that prepares us for where we are heading. After it, I will do community service and serve my community as I am waiting for my exam results, which I am expecting good results and going to university." - Eline's post graduate reflection

We know that you join us in celebrating Eline and all of our graduates as we wish them the best in the next chapter of their lives.

Thank you very much for your incredible support that helped make this milestone possible.

With Gratitude,
Tunu and Orkeeswa School
Dear TSF sponsors,

This is Tunu, the Communications and Development Manager at Orkeeswa School.

I hope you are doing well and staying safe in the midst of the ongoing pandemic.

In case you didn't get our newsletter, Orkeeswa School has taken the following steps in response to the COVID-19 pandemic:
* Closed the school on Monday, March 16 in anticipation that cases would soon be confirmed in Tanzania
* Ahead of that, we educated students and staff about the virus, social distancing, and other preventative measures they could start taking immediately
* Created and distributed Swahili informational materials to share with families and community members.
If you have any questions about Orkeeswa during this time, please let us know.

While this is a unique time globally, we are working hard to make sure we keep things on track with Orkeeswa School, and that includes keeping our Scholarship Program updated and in full operation.

Eline has been preparing for her National Examinations this year, but also really applying herself as a scholar, leader, and role model in her school and in her community.

We sat down with her to hear her thoughts about her final year of high school, and this is what she had to say, “I feel very proud of myself for making it to 12th Grade! I am the first born in my family of 7, and the first to reach higher education, so I feel like I am setting a good example and being a good role model for my siblings. My parents have always done their best to support and encourage me, so I hope to make them proud by achieving my dream of becoming a tour guide or a pharmacist.”

Regarding her favorite subject in class, Eline said “During my final school years, I have enjoyed Chemistry, Organic chemistry to be specific. It’s because it has taught me the importance of perseverance. Most students said the topic was supposed to be a difficult topic, but I’ve found it to be very interesting.”

“I also really enjoy Yoga activity” she added, “Yoga helps me relax. It has taught me that stress can cause depression and diseases, but things like yoga, focusing on yourself and caring for your body, helps you to be a healthier person, physically and mentally.”

As you can see, Eline is all grown up, having a great final year of high school and very excited of her future. We are sure she will perform well in her National Exams and go ahead to pursue her aspirations of being a pharmacist. We look forward to keeping you updated on her progress.

Attached is a photo of Eline during their Yoga activity.

Thank you for supporting Eline's education at Orkeeswa School!

Dear TSF Sponsors,

This is Samantha, Orkeeswa School's Scholarship Coordinator, writing on Eline's behalf. Eline has had a really exciting time on campus these past few months. She just began the 12th Grade, and has been studying really hard to prepare herself for her upcoming graduation in June 2020.

She has also been involved in the Beekeeping Club and Journalism staff on campus! She recently wrote an article about climate change that will be published in the school newspaper soon. She also recently attended an international Model United Nations conference!

Thank you for your continued support of Eline, which makes enriching experiences like this possible.

With gratitude,

Samantha, Eline, and Orkeeswa School
Dear TSF Sponsors,

This is Samantha, Orkeeswa School's Scholarship Coordinator, writing on behalf of Eline. Orkeeswa students just returned from their holiday break and are eager to be starting the new school year. Eline and her classmates completed their 10th grade studies and National Exams last fall, and while we wait for her exam results from the Ministry of Education, Eline is completing a 10-week internship with the Girls Foundation of Tanzania in Arusha. She is currently providing tutoring to young girls at the center's library, taking a computer skills and typing course, and volunteering at a local primary school!

This experience will provide a unique opportunity for Eline to give back to her community, as well as explore teaching as a career path as she waits to see what her next steps are in her secondary school education. We will certainly keep you updated on Eline's progress with her community service and entrepreneurship projects, as well as her plans going forward.

Thank you for your continued support of Eline and Orkeeswa School. We sincerely appreciate your partnership in providing the highest quality education to our students.

With gratitude,

Samantha

Hi Jermain, Jeanne, and TSF Sponsors,

This is Emma, the Scholarship Coordinator at Eline’s school, and I am writing on her behalf to update you all. In January, Eline and her classmates began Form Four at Orkeeswa School. As the last year of Ordinary Level education (O-level) before students continue to Advanced-Level (A-level), Form Four is an important and challenging year for students.

Eline and her classmates have been working very hard in all of their subjects and preparing for their National Examinations in November. In addition to her studies, Eline remains an active member of the girls’ soccer team at school and it’s amazing to watch her grow as a leader on and off of the field. I wanted to update you all on how she is doing at school and share some of her thoughts with you about how she plans to manage the stress of Form Four!

"I feel very proud to be in Form Four! This is something that I have planned all my life, and now I am here! Now that I am in Form Four, I really believe that I will make it. I want to go to A-level and then to University, so this is a good sign. It is good, and I am not even feeling stress now. Everything right now is revision, and I have time to study, so right now I do not feel that things are difficult. I am just so happy to be here, so I want to work very hard. In Life Skills, we learned about the signs of stress because the National Examinations can be very difficult and we need to know. Some people get very quiet, lose concentration, and feel sick when they are stressed. To reduce stress, I can have group discussions in class, sit with my friends so that they can make me laugh, or if you are not studying, you can make stories so that you think about something new. Or, if I have a problem that is really a big problem, I will tell a teacher or a friend so that she or he can help me to reduce my stress and solve the problem. For me, playing is my favorite way to reduce stress – and singing! I sing in religion, or also anytime I am doing any activity when I am not in class. I sing a lot! I think it makes me feel more relaxed because it makes me forget what I am thinking. If I am tired this year before my exams, I know that singing will help."

Thank you very much for supporting Eline’s education and Orkeeswa School! She is working hard and very appreciative of your encouragement!

With gratitude,
Emma (on Eline’s behalf)

Dear Jermain, Jeanne and TSF Sponsors,

Hi again! This is Lisa, writing on Eline's behalf. Eline wanted to update you on her progress in Form Three, and share with you some thoughts on her favorite sport, soccer. I also included a photo for you to enjoy!

"Soccer is my favorite sport because I love to play – I love everything about it. I love it because I have some great coaches who are teaching me to be an even better player, and I love going to practice. I play defense, and I like that because it is always my job to protect my team. Soccer is challenging because sometimes there just isn’t enough time to practice all of the things that we want to learn. So sometimes we have big games and I wish that we could practice all of our skills for weeks before. But, even the games can be good practice and we learn so much! We have a game this weekend, so hopefully we will win because I really enjoy when we win."

Thank you for your support of Eline's education at Orkeeswa School. She is incredibly thankful for your encouragement!

With thanks,
Lisa (on Eline's behalf)

Hi Eline,

I am sorry for getting back to you for so late. I need to do a better job a keeping up with important areas in my life such as this. I am glad to hear that you are doing well. As you have stated, there is strength and power in numbers. You are learning valuable lesson at such a young age that I am just recently learning. You have a bright future and I wish you all the best. Take care.
Hello, Eline!
I am glad to hear that you are doing well and that you have discovered how wonderful working with other people can be. Two heads really can be better than one. I am attaching a picture of me with my grandson Jack, who is making a funny face for the camera.
Hi Jermain, Jeanne and the rest of the TSF sponsors! This is Lisa, the Scholarship Director at Eline's school. Because our internet and power have been down at the school, Eline has not been able to post to her journal as regularly as she would like. Hopefully we will have our computer lab up and running soon so she can be in touch with you directly! Until then, I wanted to share a quote from Eline about collaboration that she shared at school last week:

"When we are in group discussions in class, I listen to other people's ideas and give my own ideas. I also cooperate with them with school activities, we work together, we walk together. I like to listen to other peoples' ideas and giving my own. I've learned that first of all, there are many things I don't know. I've also learned that one head cannot create as many things as two things can. If I am alone, I can do things, but I can only do so much. If I work with someone else, I will go much farther. So, for myself, I really like to work in a group so I can increase my ideas by listening to other people's ideas."

Thank you all for supporting Eline's education at Orkeeswa School!

Hi Eline,

I hope everything goes well for you. It might sound strange, but you and and others such as yourself inspire and help keep my life in perspective. The determination and love of of life that you all have is remarkable. I know it might seem easy for me to say, but please do not give up on your dreams. They do come true. So when you do become a teacher, I know that you will have a lot of inspiration and life lessons that you will be able to share. All of you guys are special in your own way. Take care and much love.
Hello, Eline,
I chose you because you want to become a teacher! I am also a teacher, and two of my children have become teachers. Thank you for wanting to help the next generation!
Jeanne

Notable experiences in my life are, first, passing my standard seven examination and, second, entering secondary school. My most difficult experience was when I started to learn English. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to work hard. I felt proud was when I entered secondary school. My most memorable and happiest thoughts are from when I celebrated at my birthday party. My dream is to be an electrical engineer. I will get there through studying hard and doing well in science subjects. If I had the power to change my country, I would like to improve the electricity supply especially in rural areas because there are shortages of electric power.

I have experience planting vegetables because my parents do that. Also, we have a garden at our home. Therefore, that is experience I have had in life. Apart from that experience, I also had a difficult experience when I failed my geography exam. That enabled me to learn how to cooperate with other students. I was so proud of myself when I performed well in my national exam. The memorable and happiest moment in my life will be when I reach my dream of being pilot. I will be so happy. My biggest dream is to be a pilot. I will get there through studying hard in physics, geography, and mathematics. After reaching my dream, I will help my parents to modify their cultivation system and to become professional farmers. From there they can expand the area of cultivation into a large plantation. Once I get a chance to have the power to change my country, I will build many airports in each region and some districts. This will help in the flexibility of transportation in my country.

Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.
