About

Sereti’s parents are both subsistence farmers — cultivating crops and raising livestock. Sereti helps her family on their farm during the weekend. Her father has three wives and many children. Sereti is the youngest of five, having one brother and three sisters. None of Sereti’s other siblings were given the opportunity to go to secondary school. Instead, they were all married immediately after finishing primary school. Sereti hopes to be able to contribute to her family and make them proud by becoming the first in her family to complete secondary school.

Hi TSF Sponsors,

This is Samantha, the Scholarship Coordinator at Orkeeswa School, writing on Sereti's behalf. I wanted to let you know that Sereti has been having some really amazing experiences recently.

In November, she graduated from 10th Grade, and spent the next few months volunteering at a local primary school teaching young girls English and Math. She really enjoyed her time volunteering, and loved being a mentor to young girls in her community.

Thank you for your continued support of Sereti and Orkeeswa School!

With gratitude,

Samantha
Dear TSF Sponsors,

This is Samantha, Orkeeswa School's Scholarship Coordinator, writing on behalf of Sereti. Orkeeswa students just returned from their holiday break and are eager to be starting the new school year. Sereti and her classmates completed their 10th grade studies and National Exams last fall. While we wait for their exam results from the Ministry of Education, these students will be participating in a teacher training seminar, doing community service with local primary school students, and engaging in Orkeeswa's entrepreneurship training program.

These experiences will provide a unique opportunity for Sereti and her classmates to give back to their community, as well as explore entrepreneurship as a career path as they wait to see what their next steps are in their secondary school education.

We will certainly keep you updated on Sereti's progress with her community service and entrepreneurship projects, as well as her plans going forward. Thank you for your continued support of Sereti and Orkeeswa School! We sincerely appreciate your partnership in providing the highest quality education to our students.

With gratitude,

Samantha

Hi TSF Sponsors,

This is Emma, the Scholarship Coordinator at Sereti's school, and I am writing on her behalf to update you all. In January, Sereti began Form Four at Orkeeswa School and she is doing very well! Form Four is a very important year in the Tanzanian education system, as it is the last year of Ordinary Level education (O-level) before students continue to Advanced-Level (A-level).

Sereti and her classmates have been working very hard to prepare for their National Examinations in November. I wanted to share some of her thoughts with you about being a Form Four student and how she is managing the stress of such an important year!

"I am very proud to be in 10th Grade because it is the last year for my O-level studies. But, I also have a lot of stress because I am thinking about the National Exams at the end of the year. Sometimes, the subjects can be easy, but there are a lot of things that we have to cover before the exam. Also, it can feel like there is not enough time, but I am trying to balance my time so that I will have enough to study. I am thinking about how I can try to release my stress when I feel tired. If I am feeling like I have a lot of stress, I think it would be good to go into different groups and share with my friends. Then we can be together and find the best way to solve the problem. If I am just at home and feel that I am thinking too much and cannot study, I will try to sleep and refresh my mind before starting again. Maybe my sister at home will let me listen to her music if I am feeling very stressed too. But, that will only be sometimes!"

Thank you very much for supporting Sereti's education and Orkeeswa School! She is working hard and very appreciative of your encouragement!

With gratitude,
Emma (on Sereti's behalf)

Hi TSF Sponsors,

This is Lisa, writing again on Sereti's behalf. Sereti is doing really well this year in Form Three, and is incredibly thankful for your support of her education. Sereti also wanted to share with you about her current club at Orkeeswa School, Public Speaking. This club has been an amazing growing opportunity for Sereti, and I'm sure you will enjoy her thoughts on the experience.

"Right now, I am in Public Speaking Club. Personally, before I did this club, I did not have any confidence to go in front of others and speak. But, now, I am gaining confidence to talk in front of others. I never knew that eye contact with my audience was so important, but now it is something that I practice and am getting better at. I am now so much more confident when speaking in front of others. I really want to learn more about how I can improve my public speaking skills – I want to stand in front of others and express myself with confidence, so every time I practice, I know I will get better."

Thank you again for your support of Sereti's education at Orkeeswa School! She is so appreciative of your encouragement.

With thanks,
Lisa (on Sereti's behalf)

Hi everyone! This is Lisa, the Scholarships Director at Sereti's school. Our internet and power have been out for the past several months, so Sereti has not had a chance to post to her journal yet. Hopefully we will have our computer lab up and running again soon so you can hear from Sereti directly. Until then, I wanted to share a quote from Sereti from her class discussion on the value of collaboration.

"Teamwork is important because you can develop many things within the group, you can gain some ideas between others and then you can make the strongest outcome. I remember one day we were working in the workshop building benches in groups. We wanted to build benches for the teachers and students to sit on during lunch and other times. We got some support from some teachers, and we were able to build them together. We could not have done this each by ourselves. Sometimes working in a group can be hard because everyone wants their idea to be the one that is chosen. When people can start to fight, it is important to remember you are sharing ideas to come up with the best one."

Thank you all for supporting Sereti's education at Orkeeswa School!

- Lisa Heinert, on Sereti's behalf

The experience that I had early in life was to score good marks in my class, whereby I got good grades which encouraged me to study hard in class. The difficult experience that occurred in my life was an accident on my way back home. I learnt that I should not play again in bad areas. In my life I am proud of myself. I was getting low marks in class but now I have managed to improve a lot. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life is to play football. It exercises my body regularly and hence strengthens my body system. My dream is to become a mechanical engineer. The best way to reach it is through studying hard in school, in physics, mathematics and chemistry. If I had power in my country, I would change the education system of the country so that it helps graduates to depend more on self-employment.

I have experience planting vegetables because my parents do that. Also, we have a garden at our home. Therefore, that is experience I have had in life. Apart from that experience, I also had a difficult experience when I failed my geography exam. That enabled me to learn how to cooperate with other students. I was so proud of myself when I performed well in my national exam. The memorable and happiest moment in my life will be when I reach my dream of being pilot. I will be so happy. My biggest dream is to be a pilot. I will get there through studying hard in physics, geography, and mathematics. After reaching my dream, I will help my parents to modify their cultivation system and to become professional farmers. From there they can expand the area of cultivation into a large plantation. Once I get a chance to have the power to change my country, I will build many airports in each region and some districts. This will help in the flexibility of transportation in my country.

Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.
