This is Emma, the Scholarship Coordinator at Isaya’s school, and I am writing on his behalf to update you all. Isaya and his classmates have been doing very well in 11th Grade this year, and it’s been amazing to watch them grow into their positions as leaders across campus. I had a chance to sit down with Isaya recently and hear his thoughts about how he learned to be a leader, and I wanted to share them with you all.
"I feel like I learned how to be a leader from my father and the way that he deals with things at home. He is always listening and advising people, but he does it in a good way that people respect. I also feel like I learned from my teachers who are always advising and helping us. I also think that I learned about leadership from reading different books, like “Democracy” by Nyerere, the former President. I think it is so important to be a leader because in our community, not everyone has the skills to help direct people. So, if you are able and have gotten the skills, you must take time to help and advise other people.
I think I am a leader because I am able to guide people in a good way— in a way that they will appreciate. For example, in soccer, I am a team captain and the other players are very happy that I am a captain. They have asked me to stay captain because I am always working to do the right things for them and for the team. For example, if we want everyone to be on time, I am really pushing the players to come after school so that we can have a better development for the team and spend all of practice working hard."
At Orkeeswa, we feel lucky to have Isaya’s leadership in the classroom and on the soccer pitch, and we’re excited to continue to watch him grow and mature in his final year at Orkeeswa!
