About

Sechota has lived in Monduli Town with her grandmother and grandfather since her parents died many years ago. Her grandparents support her and her 5 other siblings on their subsistence farm. However, because they are quite old and have little money, they struggle to contribute to their grandchildren’s education. Sechota’s older sister finished secondary school and is now studying computer science at a certificate program. Sechota hopes to be able to also succeed in secondary school so that she can send her younger siblings to primary school.

Dear TSF Sponsors,

This is Samantha, Orkeeswa School's Scholarship Coordinator, writing on behalf of Sechota. Sechota is now in the final year of her Secondary School education, and has been studying very hard for her upcoming National Exams that will determine whether or not she can continue her studies in college.

Sechota's commitment to her studies is truly remarkable, and your support is what has made her education possible. Sechota made a holiday card for you in her Art Class last month, and I wanted to share it with you here!

Thank you for your continued support of Sechota and Orkeeswa School!

With gratitude,

Samantha
Hi TSF Sponsors,

This is Emma, the Scholarship Coordinator at Orkeeswa School, writing on Sechota's behalf while our internet access at school is still limited. Sechota is finishing up her Form Five year at Orkeeswa, and we are so proud of all that she has accomplished this year.

As part of our Advanced-Level program (11th and 12th grades) at Orkeeswa School, each student has the opportunity to serve and lead the younger students through tutoring, sports, activities and in mentorship. Sechota has fully embraced this aspect for Form Five and I had a chance to sit down with her and hear her thoughts about her own leadership abilities and opportunities.

"As a leader at school, I like when I am teaching the 6th grade students English and Life Skills. In Life Skills, we were teaching them about confidence and time management, as well as making sure that they are studying hard to pass their national exams and preparing for their futures by working hard now. I really liked working with the 6th graders because it gave me a good relationship with them and let me be closer with them. I think I can be a leader to them, because I have had many of the experiences that they are having now. I can give advice and maybe it will help them.

I think I learned most of my leadership skills from my mother. My mother is the one who has taken care of me my entire life. I was raised by a single parent and the way that she cared for me and my siblings has made her a big role model for me. She was always giving me guidance to go to school and do good things while avoiding bad things, so she taught me so much and led me in my own life."

Sechota will be graduating Form Five at the end of this term, and we are excited to watch as she continues her leadership in Form Six!

Thank you for supporting Sechota and her education!

With gratitude,

Emma

Hi again, TSF Sponsors! This is Lisa, updating you on Sechota's behalf. Sechota just celebrated her 10th grade graduation, and started her 11th grade studies last month. This is a great accomplishment in the Tanzanian education system, and we are sure you join us in congratulating Sechota on her accomplishments. Sechota also enjoyed participating in a poetry workshop this summer hosted by a group of visitors at Orkeeswa School. Here's an excerpt from Sechota's response to a Walt Whitman poem:

"The poet uses the idea of a powerful play to describe life. He said that everybody can contribute to life. In years to come, I want to be a lawyer. My contribution to the society is to help women and children because these are the people who suffer the most in the society. Also, I want to reduce barriers between women and men, so that both are equal in the society."

Thank you for supporting Sechota's education!

Thanks,
Lisa

Hello TSF sponsors!

This is Lisa Heinert, Director of Scholarships at Sechota's school. I am writing on Sechota's behalf, as our internet access has been limited at school, making it hard for Sechota to post to her journal. Sechota is doing great and is eager to start Form Five (11th grade) next month. She just finished her community service project, which involved teaching and coaching at a local primary school for two months.

As she reflected on this experience and her future goals, Sechota was reminded of why she wants to continue her studies in A-level and university, and share that education with others. She found her experience of teaching and coaching in the primary schools to be challenging and incredibly rewarding. She said, "To be a good teacher, you have to know your students very well. You have to know how they learn. Some students learn slowly. You should take time to teach them carefully. Not everyone learns the same way, so for some students I would stay after class with them and go over what they didn't understand. My favorite part of teaching was how the students cooperated with me in the class and in sports. I taught them how to play netball, which was very fun!"

I've also included a photo of Sechota during her community service project. Thank you so much for your support of Sechota's education!

The experience that I had early in life was to score good marks in my class, whereby I got good grades which encouraged me to study hard in class. The difficult experience that occurred in my life was an accident on my way back home. I learnt that I should not play again in bad areas. In my life I am proud of myself. I was getting low marks in class but now I have managed to improve a lot. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life is to play football. It exercises my body regularly and hence strengthens my body system. My dream is to become a mechanical engineer. The best way to reach it is through studying hard in school, in physics, mathematics and chemistry. If I had power in my country, I would change the education system of the country so that it helps graduates to depend more on self-employment.

I have experience planting vegetables because my parents do that. Also, we have a garden at our home. Therefore, that is experience I have had in life. Apart from that experience, I also had a difficult experience when I failed my geography exam. That enabled me to learn how to cooperate with other students. I was so proud of myself when I performed well in my national exam. The memorable and happiest moment in my life will be when I reach my dream of being pilot. I will be so happy. My biggest dream is to be a pilot. I will get there through studying hard in physics, geography, and mathematics. After reaching my dream, I will help my parents to modify their cultivation system and to become professional farmers. From there they can expand the area of cultivation into a large plantation. Once I get a chance to have the power to change my country, I will build many airports in each region and some districts. This will help in the flexibility of transportation in my country.

Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.
