About

Since Ngirunga’s father died many years ago, his mother has supported her four children by herself. Ngirunga now lives with his mother who is a subsistence farmer, his younger sister who is in primary school, and his two older brothers. His older brothers did not have the opportunity to go to secondary school and now work at home on the family farm. Ngirunga hopes to be able to receive a quality education so that he can give back to his family and ensure that his sister also goes to secondary school.

Hi TSF Sponsors!

This is Samantha, the Scholarship Coordinator at Orkeeswa School, writing on his behalf. I wanted to let you know that Ngirunga is now a 12th Grade student who will be very busy this year preparing for his National Exams so that he can continue on to University next year. We are very proud of him for this accomplishment and look forward to seeing him reach his full potential as a scholar and leader in his community!

Outside of academics, Ngirunga has been busy with many campus activities. Most recently, he worked on the Orkeeswa School newspaper staff to produce the 10-year Anniversary edition of the Orkeeswa Journal. He and his classmates interviewed teachers, students, and community members about the impact of Orkeeswa School. It was an incredible learning experience for him!

Ngirunga wrote a letter about his experience working on the newspaper, and I wanted to share it with you.

Thank you for your continued support of Ngirunga and his education. It is your support that makes these enriching experiences possible.

With gratitude,

Samantha
Hi TSF Sponsors!

This is Samantha, the Scholarship Coordinator at Orkeeswa School, writing on behalf of Ngirunga. Ngirunga is now in 11th grade, and he is studying Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. As you can imagine, he spends a lot of his time studying and staying late after school to review course material now that he has reached his Advanced Level studies!

Outside of classwork, Ngirunga still makes time to play sports with his friends, and has even just signed up for the Herbarium Club, which allows him to study different type of plants around campus.

Thank you for your continued support of Ngirunga and his education. It is your encouragement that has allowed him to grow into such an incredible scholar and leader on campus and in his community.

Many thanks!

Samantha

Dear Stephen, Noelle and TSF Sponsors,

Hello! This is Lisa Heinert again, getting in touch with you on behalf of Ngirunga, who is doing really well. We are so thankful for the support provided for Ngirunga's education through TSF. Thank you! Ngirunga has been doing well this year in the 10th grade (Form Four) and he wanted to give you a quick update on how his studies have been going.

The 10th grade is a big year in the Tanzania education system, as it marks the end of “Ordinary-level” education, and is the stepping-stone to the final two years of secondary education. This fall, Ngirunga and his classmates will sit for their National Exams, which will determine their options going forward for continuing their education. Many will continue on with the final two years of high school at Orkeeswa, while others will enter into certificate programs to get specialized training and preparation for the work force, such as elementary education, administrative work, agricultural training, etc. This is unique time for students to reflect on their role as a scholar at Orkeeswa School, and we wanted to share some of Ngirunga's thoughts, along with a recent photo.

"My favorite subject is Chemistry because I want to study medicine. I want to be a doctor because they are so important in society and I can help my community if I become a doctor. My favorite topic in Chemistry right now is learning about moles (the unit). I like learning about moles because you have to use math and understand them for when you do conversions."

"The subject that I find the most challenging is History. I think it is difficult because it requires a lot of revision to remember all of the different topics and facts. To overcome the challenge of studying history, I have found that studying with friends has been really helpful. If my friend has a different answer, we can discuss why our answers are different and understand where we can improve or where we were wrong."

Thank you again for your dedicated support of Ngirunga's education! He is incredibly thankful for your sponsorship and looks forward to updating you on his progress this year in Form Four.

Many thanks,
Lisa (on behalf of Ngirunga)
Stephen, Noelle, and other TSF Sponsors,
Thank you so much for your support of Ngirunga! I'm Lisa, the Scholarship Director for Ngirunga's school. We have not had internet or power at the school for a few months, so Ngirunga has not been able to post to his journal as regularly as he would like. Hopefully we will have our computer lab up and running soon so he can reply directly! I did want to share this photo and quote from Ngirunga that we got last week at school. Ngirunga has really enjoyed playing rugby and we are proud of his hard work on and off the field!
"I like to play rugby because it’s fun. Playing rugby makes me happy, and it makes me strong. I think it’s so much fun because I get to play it with my friends. I liked to practice with the coaches from Bhubesi Pride because I learned from them. They taught me a lot of simple things I didn’t know about rugby and different ways of playing the game."
Thank you again for supporting Ngirunga's education!

I think it is a wonderful thing what you are doing Ngirunga, educating yourself so that one day, your sister may also receive an education. Good luck!
Hi Ngirunga,

I have experience planting vegetables because my parents do that. Also, we have a garden at our home. Therefore, that is experience I have had in life. Apart from that experience, I also had a difficult experience when I failed my geography exam. That enabled me to learn how to cooperate with other students. I was so proud of myself when I performed well in my national exam. The memorable and happiest moment in my life will be when I reach my dream of being pilot. I will be so happy. My biggest dream is to be a pilot. I will get there through studying hard in physics, geography, and mathematics. After reaching my dream, I will help my parents to modify their cultivation system and to become professional farmers. From there they can expand the area of cultivation into a large plantation. Once I get a chance to have the power to change my country, I will build many airports in each region and some districts. This will help in the flexibility of transportation in my country.

Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.

Notable experiences in my life are, first, passing my standard seven examination and, second, entering secondary school. My most difficult experience was when I started to learn English. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to work hard. I felt proud was when I entered secondary school. My most memorable and happiest thoughts are from when I celebrated at my birthday party. My dream is to be an electrical engineer. I will get there through studying hard and doing well in science subjects. If I had the power to change my country, I would like to improve the electricity supply especially in rural areas because there are shortages of electric power.
