Dear TSF Sponsors,

This is Samantha, Orkeeswa School's Scholarship Coordinator, writing on behalf of Naserian. Naserian is now in the final year of her Secondary School education, and has been studying very hard for her upcoming National Exams that will determine whether or not she can continue her studies in college.

Naserian's commitment to her studies is truly remarkable, and your support is what has made her education possible. Naserian made a holiday card for you in her Art Class last month, and I wanted to share it with you here!

Thank you for your continued support of Naserian and Orkeeswa School!

With gratitude,

Samantha
Hello, TSF Sponsors!

This is Samantha, the Scholarship Coordinator at Orkeeswa School, updating you on Naserian's behalf. Naserian is now a high school senior, and has been studying very hard for her upcoming national examinations so that she can complete her higher studies in May. We are very proud of everything she has accomplished so far, and can't wait to see how she will continue to impact her community as an Orkeeswa graduate!

Recently, in her Career and College Counseling class, Naserian has been learning how to write resumes and cover letters so that she can be successful in her post-grad life. She also wrote a personal statement that articulates her future goals and the challenges that she has overcome to reach them, and I thought you would like to read it.

"One day, when I was in Form Two, my aunt was forced to get married when she was 15 years old. I was shocked and angry when this happened, and it was this moment that made me want to become a lawyer so that I can help young girls, like my aunt, who can’t accomplish their dreams of becoming someone in the future because they are forced into child marriage.

My aunt was doing very well in school; she finished her Standard Six in primary school and was going to start Standard Seven (5th grade). But in December, her father brought a man to marry her. He was old, and he had two wives, so my aunt was to be the third wife. Her father told her that she must marry the man with no argument. Because Maasai women are not allowed to make their own decisions for themselves, she agreed. The old man paid the bride price, and my aunt was taken away by him.

Watching this happen to my aunt, with her dreams now ruined, I felt that her problem was also my own. I was sad and angry because she was young and she wanted to become someone in the future, not a mother at a young age while other girls get to stay in school and continue studying. I thought of my aunt’s young sister, who was also in school. I thought that maybe she would also be forced into marriage, and that maybe I would, too. I tried to talk to my aunt, but she was afraid to go and find help from other people. We were young, so we did not know where to go and find help. This really hurt me a lot.

I will always remember that day, and that is why I want to become a lawyer who mostly helps Maasai girls who are affected by this bad cultural traditional custom. That is why I work so hard in school, and that is why I will fulfill my dreams of becoming a lawyer in my community."

Thank you for your continued support of Veronica and her education. Your support and encouragement makes her success possible!

With gratitude,

Samantha
Hello TSF Sponsors!

This is Emma, the Scholarship Coordinator at Orkeeswa School, updating you on Naserian's behalf. Naserian has been doing very well this year in Form 5 (11th grade), and will be graduating to Form 6 at the end of this term.

Form Five is an important year for students at Orkeeswa, as they begin to take on more responsibilities and leadership positions across campus. I wanted to share with you what Naserian had to say when asked about her own leadership abilities and opportunities this year.

"I feel like being a leader of myself is important because I can first determine who I am, and then after that, I can make good decisions. I can set goals for my future and for my community, and then I can act in ways that will help me achieve those goals, and will show others how to do the same. If you see issues in your community and if you are a leader, you can try to solve the problems and give solutions to the community leaders to help. I always try to make sure that I speak up when I see problems in my community and come up with my own ideas.

I think I learned leadership skills from my parents, other students, and leadership programs at school. My parents taught me leadership because I learned so much by watching how they do things and how they have advised people throughout my life. I also feel like I learned leadership from reading about other leaders in the world, like Nelson Mandela. I read about Nelson Mandela in the girls leadership program at school, and also about Mahatma Gandhi, and these people inspired me a lot about fighting for freedom and leading whole communities."

We have really enjoyed watching Naserian grow into the leader she is today and look forward to seeing her continue her strong leadership into Form 6.

Thank you for supporting Naserian and her education!

With gratitude,

Emma

Hello Naserian
Hopping that you are fine and all your families and relatives are also fine too.
My name is Samwel,I am from Iringa Tanzania in Klerruu secondary school.
I would like to share to you what I have learn in my week.
It is about EARTHQUAKES
Earthquakes refer to the sudden shaking or vibrations of the earth’s crust due to sudden and rapid displacement of tectonic plates along the line of weakness (faults). It occurs mainly in volcanic eruption zones. The point from which the earthquake originates is known as focus and the intensity of earthquakes can be measured by using an instrument called seismograph. The point on the surface vertically above the focus is called epicentre.
There are several causes of earthquakes. These are:-
• Faulting of the lithosphere caused by tectonic movement where one plate slides over another plate.
• Mass wasting like land slide and rock fall can cause occurrence of earthquake, but this is for local scale.
• Falling objects from the atmosphere such as meteorites may lead to the shaking earth’s crust.
• Man’s influence through his activities such as mining using explosives like dynamites and transport vessels like trains and heavy trucks.
Also there are some effects which are:-
• They can cause loss of life and property.
• They can displace parts of the earth’s crust vertically or laterally.
• They can raise or lower parts of the sea floor.
• They can raise or lower coastal rocks.
• They can cause landslide and open up deep cracks in the surface rocks.
There are several Measurement of earthquake. These are like as follows:-
The intensity and magnitude measure the strength of the earthquake. These are obtained by detecting the Seismic waves using instruments called seismograph or seismometer.
Intensity is a measure of how hard the earthquake shakes the ground. It is determined through the effects produced by the earthquake. Intensity varies from one place to another. While the intensity of a specific earthquake varies, its magnitude does not vary. So it is important not to confuse magnitude with intensity.
The scale which measures the intensity is called Mercalli scale. It ranges from undetectable, moderate, strong to major catastrophe.
Magnitude refers to the total amount of amount of energy released and it is given on the Ritcher scale. This scale ranges from 0 to 8.9.
There are several precautionary measures to avoid high damage from earthquakes. These are
• Refraining from building high-rising structures on the land vulnerable to earthquake as well as strengthening buildings by using reinforced concrete, steel frames, deep foundations and light roofs.
• Geologists should detect epicentres and tell the people to evacuate the places likely to be affected by earthquakes.
• To avoid constructing very large water bodies like Kariba dam which can cause the earthquakes due to the weight of water and other materials.
• Discouraging the use of explosives like dynamites in breaking the rocks during mining and construction operations.
Can you share to me something that was interest to you during your week??????
Also I would like to know from you about What are your favorable subject and what funny do you like mostly???????????
....................Wish you nice weekend...............
Dear Naserian.
I hope you are fine and me I am fine too.

Hallo Naserian
am nuru I have also studied at monduli in Enyoratta Engai .surely wish to be your friend please accept we shall be exchanging ideas
Hi again, TSF Sponsors! This is Lisa, updating you on Naserian's behalf. Naserian just celebrated her 10th grade graduation, and started her 11th grade studies last month. She is really excited about the final two years of secondary education, and I am sure you join all of us at Orkeeswa School in congratulating her on this accomplishment. Naserian also enjoyed participating in a poetry writing workshop this summer with a group of visitors at Orkeeswa School. Here's an excerpt from her writing response to a Walt Whitman poem.

"The poet Walt has an idea that a powerful play explains life in the world. He said that anyone can contribute to the powerful play in life. I would like to contribute by being a lawyer who fights for women and children because they are the most abused by people in the world, which makes it difficult for them to live in the world. Many of them do not get the opportunity to study, and they are forced to get married. This idea came to me when I was in primary school, when one of my classmates was forced to get married when she was fifteen years old. That was when I thought to myself that I should stop this, and when I become older, I should study law to prevent this."

Thank you for supporting Naserian's education!

With thanks,
Lisa

Keep up the great work Naserian!

Hello Mari and other TSF sponsors!

This is Lisa Heinert, Director of Scholarships at Naserian's School. I am writing on Naserian's behalf, as our internet access has been incredibly limited at school, making it hard for Naserian to post to her journal. Naserian is doing great and is eager to start Form Five (11th grade) next month. She just finished her community service project, which involved teaching and coaching at a local primary school for two months.

As she reflected on this experience and her future goals, Naserian was reminded of why she wants to be a lawyer. She said, "In the future, I would like to be a lawyer. A lot of women and young ladies in my community are suffering because they are getting forced into marriages. I need to help them. Because they don't have education, they don't know that they have rights. I want to be a lawyer so I can defend those girls and help people to know their rights."

I've also included a photo of Naserian teaching during her community service. Thank you so much for your support!

I have experience planting vegetables because my parents do that. Also, we have a garden at our home. Therefore, that is experience I have had in life. Apart from that experience, I also had a difficult experience when I failed my geography exam. That enabled me to learn how to cooperate with other students. I was so proud of myself when I performed well in my national exam. The memorable and happiest moment in my life will be when I reach my dream of being pilot. I will be so happy. My biggest dream is to be a pilot. I will get there through studying hard in physics, geography, and mathematics. After reaching my dream, I will help my parents to modify their cultivation system and to become professional farmers. From there they can expand the area of cultivation into a large plantation. Once I get a chance to have the power to change my country, I will build many airports in each region and some districts. This will help in the flexibility of transportation in my country.

Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.

Notable experiences in my life are, first, passing my standard seven examination and, second, entering secondary school. My most difficult experience was when I started to learn English. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to work hard. I felt proud was when I entered secondary school. My most memorable and happiest thoughts are from when I celebrated at my birthday party. My dream is to be an electrical engineer. I will get there through studying hard and doing well in science subjects. If I had the power to change my country, I would like to improve the electricity supply especially in rural areas because there are shortages of electric power.
