Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) transforms urban poverty to urban promise. SHOFCO provides free medical care, community empowerment programs, quality education, and clean water in the slums of Nairobi. The School Fund works with SHOFCO to provide scholarships that allow children to attend quality public secondary schools outside of the slum.
I attended Desert Streams School and now am a student at Wamagan Girls School. The school is close to Mount Kenya, and it is very cold which was an adjustment coming from Nairobi. I work hard to achieve my goals because coming from the slums, this scholarship is my only chance to attend high school. I will study very hard to ensure that I can pass. I am very thankful for this opportunity.
School Year 2022
I am Tracy Nanjira from the Kibera slum. I studied at Kimathi Primary school and got 324 marks on the KCPE. I later joined Gitwe Girls School in Kiambu County in Kenya. I managed to attend this school because of the SHOFCO scholarship program. My challenges are both in school and at home but because they are part of life we have to encounter them. While at home I at times get depressed since I love being in school. Due to this pandemic time my parents do not have jobs, both of them lost their work and life has really been rough for us. Tt is hard for us to understand that our parents can no longer provide for our needs and even the little thngs at home. My younger brother does not even know what the world is today, but we thank God all of us are safe and sound.

"I am 13 years old and born in Kibera slums in Nairobi. I come from a nuclear family whereby my parents work as casual workers. My life both at home and school has been good, but with some challenges. My aspirations are to have a good career job and help the community in the future. I would also like to eradicate poverty in the community, as well as help the youth to know God. I want to be a neurologist and get my certificate in America. I want to help my parents with their life and help those who are hungry, thirsty, and lack shelter. I want to also build a children's home so orphans can get basic needs and a home for aged people. I want to be a doctor who cares for the sick. "
School Year 2019
I have five siblings - one brother and four sisters. Subjects I love are Math and science as they do help me solve problems in real life. Learning math and solving problems is part of the many things that make me happy since when I get to teach others who might not understand when new things are taught I do get to learn again in the process. My hobby is drawing, this is what I enjoy doing when I am free. I do look forward to becoming an engineer when I grow up so as to make new designs of buildings and other things.

Ivin's parent's are day laborers and do not make enough money to pay her school fees. She has been able to attend school this far based on donations from a local church. She longs to continue to a higher level in school and to make her parents proud. She currently lives in a one room house with both her parents and her two siblings. She often has to go to school without eating breakfast first. She longs to finish school and improve the prospects for her family.
School Year 2019
My hobbies are drawing, painting, and reading. I also enjoy practicing my typing on computers in school and training myself to learn how to swim when I can. My favorite subject is art because it involves a lot of painting, colouring, drawing, and some cut-outs. When I grow up, I would like to be an optician. Although opticians have tough times, I will not give up on my dream because I would like to give something back to the community. I would love to be a famous optician known around the whole of world. My dream is to travel the world helping people with their eye problems. I would like to thank my mum for all the good things that have happened to me and the C.E.O of our school, Kennedy Odede. He is my role model.
