About

Michael lives in one small room with his mother and brother. His mother is a house worker and works six days a week. His brother is in Class 2 at Spurgeon's on a scholarship. Michael was also sponsored through primary school at Spurgeon's Academy through a scholarship program at the school that supports single parent families. He received a 385 on his KCPEs and 407 on his marks before exams. Michael does not know his father. Their rent is 800 Kenyan shillings (about $10 USD) per month, and they pay an additional 300Ksh for electricity. When asked what Michael's "Plan B" would be if he does not receive a scholarship, he said that there would be nothing he could do and he would consider repeating Class 8 while searching for another option. Michael's head teacher describes him as a very well behaved and hardworking pupil. Michael also describes himself as hardworking and states that he cannot disappoint anybody. Michael has ambitions to become a pilot in the future, and believes that this scholarship would help him to achieve his dreams. When asked how Michael responds to pressure and how he would handle the work load that comes with attending a prestigious secondary school, Michael shared confidently that he usually does not find himself feeling overwhelmed, he finds a way to manage the work. When asked what receiving this scholarship would mean to him, he said it would help him to achieve his goals. The challenges he has faced throughout his education so far have been having to help with house work and needing to walk a very long distance to the library on Saturdays to study. Michael's family reported no relatives in Kibera who are able to help support them through school.

Hi Michael,

How are you doing? I'm writing from Boston, where it is very cold even though it is supposed to be getting warmer as the summer approaches. I am excited because the flowers are beginning to bloom here, and the winter is finally receding. I can see that you like to read. Have you been reading any good books recently? I just finished a very good book about England, and am starting up another one about India. I really enjoy reading.

Tim
Hi Team,
Thank you so much. I am trying as much as I can to keep my dreams alive. I am glad to hear that you are going back to school. You have a very good system in the USA that makes it everyone to access quality education. I know you might find it challenging going back to school after those so many years.
Best of luck in your studies.

It was 2009 when I started standard 1. I was very happy to start primary level. When my mother died, it was really painful to me. It is a gap which will never be filled in my heart. After the funeral, I continued my studies. I am thankful I completed the term and passed the exam to standard 2. When I was in class 2, my father was my hope but after my mother's death, he changed and did not take care of me. Instead I was raised by my relatives. In 2010, my father died too and I have lived with my grandmother ever since. I was my parents' only child. Because of these challenges, I have learned that education is the best of all worldly things, better than money which gets used up. Education is the best heritage. I will never give up the chance for education. I really appreciate being selected as a scholarship beneficiary of The School Fund. I will work hard, very hard, to achieve my dream and help less fortunate people

My dream is to become an accountant and I will get there by studying hard. The moment that I felt proud of myself is when I learned that I passed the Standard 7 National Exams. The happiest moment in my life is when I was selected by the Ebenezer Seminary for my secondary school education. The most difficult experience I had is the death of my my best friend. He died of malaria. Malaria is a disease that can be treated. My friend could be alive if he got proper medical treatment. I learn from his death that we need to help our poor friends with their basic needs. I plan to help the orphans to make sure they can reach their dreams as I will. I will also contribute some of my salary to help the disabled people after my dream comes true.

Carmen is one of our most dedicated students. She attends all of our events and meetings, and is eager to begin her studies. After graduating high school, she worked as a waitress in Puka Rumi, one of the best restaurants in town. Here, under the mentorship of renowned chef Alejo, she fell in love with the art of cooking and hopes to someday open her own restaurant. In her spare time, she is an athlete. Her favourite sport is volleyball, and she was the only female to compete in last year's Ollantaytambo weightlifting competition! She comes from a humble campesino (rural indigenous) family. Since her father passed away 16 years ago, she and her nine siblings have since been raised by her single mother.
