About

Sarika was born in a village called Gulripurwa in Uttar Pradesh , India. She is the third child amongst the seven children born to her parents. As common in almost every rural India, what is known of her date of birth is just the year she was born in. She's now 16 years old and very much happy that she has the chance to complete her education. Sarika was compelled to drop out of school after completion of class 5. The reason was because her mother had been diagnosed with a mental disorder. Sarika was responsible of taking caring of her sick mother. As her father works as a laborer in Lucknow Uttar Pradesh, earning only INR 2000 a month, he remained mostly away from home, therefore not having a chance to be with his wife. Now that Sarika's mother is recovering; she wants to continue with her education with the full support from her family. English is her favorite subject and after attaining her education she aspires to be a teacher so that she can impart knowledge to disadvantaged children, and also earn a living at the same time. Besides, she is also very fond of tailoring. She is very determined to complete her schooling and attend college.

I am the only child of a single mother. She works as a casual laborer and this helps in putting food on our table. Secondary education in Kenya is very expensive and this would require extra source of income which is not available at the moment. We live in the slums of Kibera. This is the largest slum in Kenya and poverty rate is very high. I work hard in school with one ultimate goal, to break the cycle of poverty. They say education is the best way and I believe in this philosophy.

Ahmed is not only compassionate, but also deeply introspective. When asked what is the most important lesson he’s learned at Abaarso, he took a moment to reply. “I learned how to be patient when you meet challenges.”

I am from a nuclear family with poor economic status. We depend on a small plot of farm. Paying for my school needs is difficult. At the beginning of the first term of my school, I hoped to do better in my class and now I am. I worked with carpenters during the break in order to pay school requirements. It was difficult to keep reviewing in mind what we learned for the whole term. My father did not go to secondary school and he doesn't understand the value of education. My dream is to be an engineer I can reach this by learning good skills.
