About

Fernando unfortunately grew up most of his life as an orphan, having lost both his parents at a young age. Having a lack of support and guidance, Fernando did not begin caring about his education until high school. Fernando's cousin, Raul, another Mosqoy student, introduced Fernando to Mosqoy and its program. The support and family structure Mosqoy offers is what brought Fernando to us, having had little of it when growing up. Fernando is now enrolled into Kiphu Institute where he is studying Tourism. He hopes to help teach his community Spanish so tourism can be a viable economic opportunity. He hopes to be able to teach travelers about his community culture and weaving traditions.

Hello all!

It is my pleasure to update you on Fernando, who recently finished his studies in Tourism!! Through the work experience gained whilst studying, he was able to find work very quickly and is busy travelling and working with different tour operators in the Cusco region. On behalf of Fernando and Mosqoy, I’d like to thank all of the donors that supported him during his studies - we are so grateful for your generous support! We wish Fernando the best of luck as he embarks on his chosen career. He is a friendly and lively person - very much suited to guiding!

Hello, my name is Fernando Echame Melo and I am from the campesino community of Huilloc in the District of Ollantaytambo, Province of Urubamba in the Cusco Region. I am studying to become an official tour guide in the private institute of Khipu and I am nearly done with my studies. Why this vocation? I love adventure, learning about cultures, customs, and above all I love traveling to new places. When I finish my studies I would like to help many people who may need support, and affirm the value of my customs, culture, and the Quechua language, which is my mother tongue and is in danger of extinction. I live in Casa Mosqoy, where me and the other Mosqoy students do many things together, like events, welcoming newcomers to the house, and daily activities. I study English, and from there I return to the house to have lunch. I then return to the institute to study Tourism until the evening. On the weekends I return to my community, and sometimes visit archeological sites in Cusco and other areas. I also love to spend the weekends playing soccer with my friends.
