About

Every moment of my life I believe I will be successful. I want to be a doctor and in order to get there, I will use my time to read many varieties of books, especially science. I am proud of being a form 1 student of Wel Wel secondary school. In my national examination of standard 7, I got 199/250 marks. I was very happy. My happiness became big when I was chosen to be supported by the School Fund. My school life and life at home are not happy. We lack in several needs at school and home. I was thinking of how I can accomplish my goal of being a doctor when I have had such a hard life. I hope two years from now I can finish my form 4 education.

Hi Students!

I just read all the journal entries I have received since October. Such wonderful letters! I am so impressed by how mature and articulate you have become. I’m realizing that I have now been reading some of your journals for 5 years. When I look at your photos, I don’t recognize the child I first knew. You are teenagers now.
I especially love the stories that some of you told in your journals. Moral tales, I call them.

So congratulations for working so hard. I’m hoping you will achieve your goals, go to a university if you want, and become productive members of your community, and able to help others as you have been helped.

I am enjoying retirement. My age of 76 is bringing on a bit of health problems, like arthritis, but I keep active physically and don’t let it stop me from doing what I love to do.

I read a lot. I travel. I go to jazz concerts in San Francisco. I would love to return to Kenya and Tanzania for a visit. I’d love to visit your school. Maybe it will happen. Who knows?

So keep up the great efforts. I know it can’t be easy, but this is such a wonderful opportunity.

Very fondly, Susan
Hello Susan. It is my hope that you doing well in you activities.i would like to learn about trade in order to help people to understand many things about it.
This was the type of trade which involve people of different regions and of different ethnic groups within the same geographical location. People who are involved in the trade were required to travel to a distant place where the exchange was conducted. The exchange was conducted for the purpose of making profit. Long distance traders in Africa were Kamba, Yao, Vimbundu of Angola, Bisa and Chewa of Malawi, Tuareg of Western Sudan and Nyamwezi of Tanzania.
Types of long distance trade
1.East Africa regional trade.
2.Central Africa regional trade.
3.West Africa regional trade.
In East Africa the prominent traders were Yao, Nyamwezi, Kamba and Baganda whereby the items were ivory, slaves, copper, gold, forest products etc.
Routes of the trade in East Africa: Southern routes dominated by Yao, Central routes dominated by Nyamwezi and Northern route dominated by Kamba.
Central African prominent traders were Imbangala and Ovimbundu of Angola, Chewa and Bisa of Malawi and Nyamwezi were also involved. Commodities of trade included copper from Katanga which was exchanged with salt from Uvinza, cloth from Congo, ivory, hides and skins and iron equipments from Shona and Ndebele of Zimbabwe. West african regonal traders were Edo of Nigeria and Yoruba of Nigeria.
The impacts of long distance trade in Africa.
1.Emergence of strong chiefdoms and states in Africa. The kings who monopolized trade gained a lot from the ivory. They strengthen their positions eg. Kabarega of Bunyoro, Kabaka of Buganda, Mirambo of Nyamwezi and Nyungu ya Mawe of the Kimbu.
2.The emergence of powerful Afro Arabs and African business men such as Seyyid Said, Msiri and Tippu tip. They operated along the coast and the interior of East and Central Africa.
3.The spread of swahili language along the East Africa coastal people to the interior part. Due to intermarriage between Bantu and the Arabs swahili culture psread to the interior from the coast.
4.Spread of islamic religion which originate from the middle East. The islamic religion and its culture spread to the coast of Africa especially East and North Africa. It was strong along the trading cities with Arab traders such as Ujiji,Tabora and Eastern Zaire

Fiona is the last born in a family of three. She lives with both her parents who are casual labourers. Her mother had a major surgery on her left hand in 2020. This made them sell part of their property to take care of the medical bills and thus reducing their income significantly and again making it very difficult for them to take care of the education bills of their children. Fiona drew her inspiration to pursue success from her Math teacher and she aspires to be a civil engineer to make contributions in the development of infrastructure in her village.
