About

Maureen Njeri is a bright 16-year old girl. Her parents were divorced when she was a young girl, so she does not know her father. This led the mother to move back in with her poor parents, though Maureen's grandfather had died before she was born. As the grandmother is a peasant farmer with a small, unproductive piece of land, they are poor. Because Maureen's mother has a deformed right hand, it is too painful for her to do work. Therefore the poor grandmother is the bread-winner of the family. This lack of resources almost ended Maureen's dream of becoming a doctor. She was at risk of dropping out of school and getting into child commercial sex for survival. But she found hope in Agape Mercy Children's Center when she was admitted in the year 2007 in class seven. After graduating from standard eight at Gathanji Primary School, she joined St. Basil Secondary School. At AMCC, she has a leadership role as a treasurer. Her favorite food is rice with chicken stew.

Hi Maureen! Thank you for the updates on your exams. I hope they went well! How have you been? I remember that you like to play netball. Have you had a chance to play recently?
Dear School Fund,

I have not yet started my examination at the time of writing this, but some schools have already
started. This is because of the subjects that we take in our school while other schools do some subjects that I do not do and hence started earlier according to the Kenya National Examinations Council Timetable. I started on Friday 26.10.2012 (October 26).

I am really working hard to ensure that I have achieved my goal. May God bless you and have a blessed time.

Emmaculate is the last born in a family of three; one sister and one brother. Her parents rely on subsistence farming for livelihood, which has been greatly affected by the changing climate. While in primary school, Emmaculate spent most of the time at home while the other students were at school. This was because of lack of finances to cater for some of the requirements at school. This did not stop her but instead propelled her towards achieving her dream of becoming a cardiologist in order to save lives. Her role model is Barack Obama and she likes his phrase of ‘Yes we can’. Moreover, she likes reading story books during her free time.
