Olivia is bright young woman who is very proud of her Ngobe heritage. This pride was the theme of her application essay. "I want to fight and say that in our comarca (reservation) we can do many things if we try to reach our goals," she wrote. Olivia plans to help her community by becoming a health official and she understands that she must work very hard and focus on her studies to achieve her dream. Her teacher described her as positive, responsible, and observant, a quality which was apparent throughout her essay, but especially in her response regarding one of her favorite subjects in school. "One of my favorite subjects is informatica (technology) because it helps me to connect to the globalizing world in which we live and it will help me achieve my goal of being a health official."

Erika: The answer is, well first I looked for a person that would help me with my math subject and I passed the class and that made me feel very good because my cousin taught me things that I didn’t understand and this year I will go to the next level that is 10th grade and thank you for suggesting that I find someone to help me with the subject that I didn’t understand and I know that I will pass this class since you didn’t think it was good for me to stay behind in the grade. It makes me very happy to send this message to you but I also appreciate that you send me this message because it is good to learn and to continue studying to become someone in life and I also I send thanks to you that are supporting us students. If you're worried about math, try to find someone who can tutor you and help you learn it. A friend to study with or an adult who is good at math. Asking for help is a great habit to be in for your whole long life. Good luck with your schooling, Olivia. And happy New Year!

Hello, very nice to meet you.

I am going to send you a note about a concern that I have. My concern is for my friends who do not want to continue studying and I am worried about mathematics because I don’t want to have to stay behind a year and I want to pass this subject this year. My family is happy that I am interested in school but this class concerns me a lot. My favorite games are soccer and volleyball and my favorite food is rice and beans. I gladly thank all of the donors who are helping me and I send greetings to all of the donors.

My favorite class last year was English because I learned a lot about the different kinds of contamination like of rivers, soil, air, and others. Last year, math was the most difficult subject for me. I learned that it is good to study to be a professional some day and that I should carry myself well with all the teachers and students.

Thank you for supporting myself and my friends in our studies, and for being so generous with the students in the Comarca, many thanks. I want you to know that I love to study and that I conduct myself well with all the teachers and my classmates.

For this summer academic recess, I plan to study the subjects that were difficult for me, to pass onto the next grade.

December 2011 - I am very happy for this support that you are giving me and I feel very good because I will continue to study next year. I have already had subjects in school that I really like and that make me want to participate. I feel very good that I want to be a professor when I grow up.     Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.

    Notable experiences in my life are, first, passing my standard seven examination and, second, entering secondary school. My most difficult experience was when I started to learn English. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to work hard. I felt proud was when I entered secondary school. My most memorable and happiest thoughts are from when I celebrated at my birthday party. My dream is to be an electrical engineer. I will get there through studying hard and doing well in science subjects. If I had the power to change my country, I would like to improve the electricity supply especially in rural areas because there are shortages of electric power.

    The experience that I had early in life was to score good marks in my class, whereby I got good grades which encouraged me to study hard in class. The difficult experience that occurred in my life was an accident on my way back home. I learnt that I should not play again in bad areas. In my life I am proud of myself. I was getting low marks in class but now I have managed to improve a lot. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life is to play football. It exercises my body regularly and hence strengthens my body system. My dream is to become a mechanical engineer. The best way to reach it is through studying hard in school, in physics, mathematics and chemistry. If I had power in my country, I would change the education system of the country so that it helps graduates to depend more on self-employment.
