Patson,

Hi my name is Robin, and I am part of East Lyme High School's Chikumbuso club. I am so excited about this opportunity to speak to you personally. I am very sorry to read about your family troubles this term, and I wish you all good health in the future. I hope you can find a way to push through these challenges because I am sure your success would be a great comfort and honor to your family.

Here in my school, I am currently preparing for my 4 Advanced Placement examinations that begin next week.I am most scared for Biology. Which subject do you find the hardest? Also, everyone is getting excited for the Prom dance in a few weeks. Do you have dances at your school?

Good luck with everything!

-Robin
Hi Patson,

My name is Jaclyn, and I am a student at Brown University who works with The School Fund. I noticed your journal post, and wanted to take this chance to introduce myself. I am sorry that you are having a difficult term. It is of course a great challenge to deal with the illnesses of family members and to study hard in school at the same time. I trust that you will do your best to be a supportive son and brother and to be a good student as best you can.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Jaclyn
Dear Sponsors,

First and for most I hope you are all fine. As for me this term, life has been a little bit harsh on me. This is because the two young brothers of my late father are seriously sick. This has also affected my thinking capability at school when it comes to concentration. I am also worried about my sister who is having problems with her ears and this has effected her performance in school.

This term I won't promie you that I will produce best results. I hope you ail all understand my situation. But even through all these things are happening to me I have put all of it in the hands of our almighty God. I am kind of confused because this term I had plans of working hard at school and satisfying you with your expectation of good results. But as far as the tests are conceded I have no hope that I will pass with good marks.

Your support, love and care that you show upon me has encouraged me a lot to be strong in everything I am doing. I won't top thanking God for all the good things you are doing. May God bless you all for all the things you are doing for me and Chikumbuso at large.

Thank You

Patson Z Kaweme
Dear Mama Linda, Sabrina, and Shannon,

First and for most, greetings to you and your family. As for me and my family we are all fine. As a Chikumbuso member I appreciate all the things you are doing, not only for me and my family, but the world at large. You are all such good, caring and supportive people for Chikumbuso. But most importantly to me you are all a great inspiration. The things you are doing have inspired me a lot in which also have made me to be having dreams of helping other people who are in need. How i wish the whole world was full of people as loving, caring and supportive as you all are. I don't think there would be suffering in this world.

I am enjoying school all because of the support and care you are offering me. That is why I also work hard at school because I know it is the only way I will succeed in the future and do great things and become an inspiration to other people just like you are to me and others. Thank you for supporting me, and I would encourage you to continue with the same spirit. I know God is seeing all what you are doing and may be bless you and your families. I have so many things that I would like to appreciate, but this is all that I can say at this moment: Thanks for all the things you have done for Chikumbuso and also for what you are planning to do for Chikumbuso in the future. May God protect you and your families.

Dear Maureen,

First and for most, greetings to you and your family. As for me and my family, we are all doing great! School is fine and I am doing my very best in whatever I have been given to do (such as assignments and activities).

Just this month our school participated in an Inter-schools Competition. This included categories like athletics, long jump, high jump, and short put. But this month for me has been full of presser even though I have tried all my best to overcome some of them. Just as I was preparing for the athletics competition, I came to be sick and I came to have sores on both of my feet because of the hard training I was having. But as soon as I saw this happening to my feet, I went to the clinic and I was given some medicine. Then afterwards I was given some injections. This came to be unfortunate for me because I was not allowed to participate in the athletics because of my sores. This made me to be unhappy at this particular moment because I was very prepared for the Inter-School Athletic Competition and I was disappointed because after all the effort, hard work, and sacrifice, I only ended up forcing myself out of the game.

Back to school issues. I have seen things so differently which defiantly shows that I am now in secondary level. Especially when it comes to subjects and studying. The newly introduced curriculum is getting tougher and tougher each day. These newly introduced subjects like ICT (Information and communication Technology) and Music are giving me a headache in terms of studying them. But for these other subjects, I am doing fine in them.

Even though all these things are hap pinging to me, I still enjoy and love school all because of your support, love and care. In whatever I am doing, I don't and won't forget to thank God for giving me such loving and supportive people like you in my life. Once again, thank you for the support and care. I am my knees appreciating all the good things you are doing for me and also for what you are about to do for me in the future.

Hi Patson,
I'm just working on our Global Friends pen pal project and was thinking of you. I am excited for you to "meet" Nate, your pen pal. Good luck with your new term.

Maureen
Hi Patson
Congratulations on achieving first place. That's very difficult to do indeed. I hope you get to go to the University of Zambia in due course. You deserve it. Melanie
Patson,

So good to hear how well you did on your exams! What an amazing grade, your family, friends and Gertrude must be so proud of you! Keep it up!
How nice for you to go and be with your uncle in the village. Farming is hard work but it sounds like you enjoyed it.
Just the thought of you spending time out in the village makes me miss Zambia so much and our little "farm" up on the hill.
Lots of joy for this new school year and thanks for writing to us, it is great to hear from you!
Congratulations on your fantastic Grade 7 scores Patson! Your hard work and dedication really paid off. Doing the very best you can in school will keep options open for you later on. Keep up the good work! It sounds like you had a good holiday at your uncle's. What kind of crops does he grow? I have a good friend who also has a birthday on Christmas Eve. She told me her mother went into labor with her when she was chasing a turkey to kill for Christmas dinner! I spent Christmas with my family out in Washington state (on the Pacific coast, north of California and Oregon. My kids are scattered now (Beth is 25, Jess is 28) but we were all together for the holidays, making it a very special time.

Good luck with your new term. Carly is helping me arrange for penpals for my Global Friends club at school. I have one student named Nate who would be a great penpal for you. Carly will let you know when we have it all lined up.

Best wishes,
Maureen
PS - we had an unexpected day off from school yesterday due to a snow storm Wednesday night. We got about 5" of snow. I love snow days because it's so unexpected and gives me a lot of time to catch up on projects or just cuddle up in a chair and read. Right now I'm reading a book called Shooting Kabul about a boy (who is about your age) whose family flees the fighting in Afghanistan for the US. I'll send a copy of it with Carly's brother Ben.
Dear Maureen, Melanie, and Sabrina,

How are you doing with your families? As for me and my family we are doing great. It has been so long since you heard from me. It's just that I went for a holiday in the central part of Zambia. I went to my uncles place who is a subsistence farmer.

When I went there I became a farmer and enjoyed farming. I came to like farming because it made me to be hard working in what ever I was doing. I could get up early in the mornings and to to the fields.

My holiday was fantastic. I enjoyed my holiday, but again I was also anxiously waiting for my grade 7 final examination results. One night I dreamed of myself passing my final examination, this dream pumped a lot of confidence in me. As I was waiting for my results I just received information which said that in 2014 the curriculum was going to change in Zambia. This got me puzzled because I had already started studying the old curriculum. But as soon as school started and we started learning this new curriculum I cam to understand it and i came to enjoy it very much.

On the 24th of December 2013, it was my birthday. I turned 14 years old and I really celebrated it happily. I was very happy because my ounce told me that I had grown up and this is the time when I am support to grow mentally. The way I think and the way I associate with other people will change. When the results were out, I became anxious and nervous until I was told that I had passed all the subjects with a score of 833. I ranked number one in Grade 7. This made me almost to faint because I couldn't believe that I came out to be number one. When I see myself to be number one, It all is because of God's grace on me. God has made to love, support and care for me. I thank God for the things he has done on me. He has protected you and me and most of all he has made us to reach another new year. I also thank you for what you have done because you have been there for me. Your support and care has encouraged me even to work extra hard not only to impress you but also for me to have a successful future ahead for me and my family.

May God bless you!

Happy 2014 and wishing you many great returns.

Part 3 The Royal Kingdom

Patson Becomes a Prisoner

In the land of Meweka village, far away from the palace lived Chief Zezu who had a daughter named Camino.

Patson became a prisoner in Meweka village. He was treated harshly and suffered as if he was a slave. He couldn't bathe, and wasn’t even given a bite to eat. As days passed, Patson became thinner and thinner.

One day camino wanted to have a speech with Patson. So she went to her father in the siting room to ask permission. “Dad, can I have a speech with the prisoner?” she asked.

“No, no, no, you shouldn’t do that. You know that in this village it is not allowed to do so!” he answered. “You know that he is a stranger. You can’t know what he might do to you when you go in that prison to speak with him.”

Camino left the room while thinking of a way to sneak into the prison. Later that night Camino went to the guards and asked them if she could go in and have a short speech with the prisoner. The guards wouldn't let her in because they were afraid they would lose their jobs if the Chief found out. But, Camino corrupted the guards by giving them the gold ornaments she was wearing. So the guards let her into the prison.

As soon as Camino entered the prison and saw Patson on the ground weak and starving. She felt something in her heart. She wanted to ask Patson some questions:
“What’s your name, and where do you come from?” Camino asked. “I am Patson, prince of a certain kingdom far away from this place” Patson answered weakly. As Camino was about to ask another question, the guards came in and dragged her out of the prison.

Camino went to bed dripping in tears thinking about Patson’s situation. His situation was unbearable, and Camino felt so sorry for him.

The next day, early in the morning, Camino prepared some food and visited the prison. As usual she had to bribe the guards to enter the prison. She gave Patson the food, and told him to eat. “Thank you very much. But who are you and why are you doing this for me? Why are you risking your life to help me?” asked Patson weakly. “Oh, um, I am Camino. The daughter of Cheif Zezu” answered camino with a smile. “I am doing this for you because you don’t deserve this. You are an innocent person. It’s just that my father is following the rules of our ancestors which says that anyone caught in this territory, who is not a member of this village must be killed and given as a sacrifice at an important ceremony” she said while dripping tears.

As Patson hungrily at the food, he told Camino that his life was in her hands. “B-u-u-t what do you mean?” she asked. “You, the lovely daughter of the chief came to save me from being sacrificed” said Patson. “Yes, but because I am the chief’s daughter, this is very dangerous. If anyone finds out that I am helping you escape, we both will be killed” Camino answered.

“Don’t worry, I will teach you a song to sing to my father. My mother taught me this song when I was a small boy, if he hears it he will know that I am alive” Patson explained. “What song is that?” she asked. Patson taught Camino how to sing the song that his mother taught him as a small boy. He told her that if she sang this song, his father would know it was a message from Patson, and Camino should bring the King here to save him. Of course this was not a simple song to learn. Camino had to practice the song each and every day. One night her father heard her singing the song softly and beautifully. “Where did you learn that song? Who taught it to you?” her father said. She only responded with “Dad, I heard it on the radio.”

1 WEEK LATER

Early one morning, when Camino was busy in the kitchen preparing breakfast, she overheard her father, the Chief, having a conversation with the prison guards. “Guards, tomorrow that prisoner should be killed as a sacrifice for the evening. Do you understand!?” “Yes your honor” answered the guards politely.

As quickly as she could, Camino secretly packed her things and left the village. No one had known that she left the village. Camino walked for many hours looking for a the place where Patson was from. Finally, late in the afternoon, she came to a certain palace and asked the guards “ is this the palace where Prince Patson originated?” The 1st guard answered “yes madam, this is where he originated,” “but unfortunately we lost him. He died in a road accident” interrupted the 2nd guard with sorrow. “Just after he died, his father, our King, became very ill. He cant even walk” he added.

Camino asked the guards for permission to enter the palace and see the King. But the guards would not let her in. They were not to let any stranger to see the King, especially in his condition. But camino begged and told the guards that she had a very important message the the King about the missing prince. When the guards hear that, they let her in and took her to where the King was sleeping.

When Camino entered the room, she saw the King lying in his bed looking so ill he looked as if he would die any moment. Just as Patson had taught her, Camino closed her eyes and started singing his song softly and beautifully. As she was singing the song so beautifully, the sick King began to wake up. By the time she finished singing and opened her eyes, the King was on his feet standing. “Young lady, who taught you that song?” the King asked. “The prince of this land taught me, and he told me to sing it to you” she answered. “Young lady, which prince are you talking about, because the only price who knew that song died in a road accident!” said the King. “Prince Patson is not dead, he is alive!” exclaimed Camino. “But don’t worry about your son anymore because I can take you to where he has been kept in the morning” said Camino.

The following morning, the King, Camino, and some guards left early in the morning so that none of the Queens or Princes knew he had left. When they reached Meweka chiefdom, they discovered that all the people looked very happy. They were all celebrating something. The King didn’t know that they were celebrating because it was the day Patson was going to be killed and given as a sacrifice.

Chief Zezu and his wife were very surprised when they saw the King arrive in such beautiful cars. They hadn’t invited anyone to the celebration, especially not someone so rich. The induna and the guards stepped out of the cars to meet the Chief. Camino and the King remained behind in the car. “Greetings to you Chief Zezu and your chiefdom. We have come here because we have been sent by our King to retrieve his son” said the induna. “What are you talking about? And who is this prince you talk of; we don’t have any prince in this chiefdom!” the Chief shouted. Just then, the induna told one of the guards to call for Camino and the King from the car. When Chief Zezu saw the King and Camino coming out of the car he was shocked and surprised at the same time. He didn’t expect his daughter to disrespect the ancestral rules of his chiefdom. Chief Zezu and his wife were very disappointed in their daughter. Chief Zezu told the guards to release Patson. When Patson came out of prison and saw his father he was so excited it felt as if his bones would jump out of his skin. The King was happy as well, he started crying tears of joy when he saw Patson.

“Camino, thank you for what you have done. Because you have saved my life I want you to be safe. Come with me to a place where no one will find you” Patson said. Patson and Camino drove away in one of the cars to a place where no one knew of. The King left Meweka village with good news. He invited the Chief and his wife to an important celebration in his kingdom.

When the King reached his palace, everyone was surprised to see the king walking happily and joyfully. No one had known that the King was healed and could walk. “People of this palace, I have good news for you” he said joyfully. “My son who was meant to inherit my kingdom died months ago, and I have decided that tomorrow I will chose which of my sons will now inherit my kingdom when I die. I have decided to have a special celebration tomorrow to share the news.” Everyone in the palace was happy to hear the news, and couldn't wait for the tomorrow to come. However Patson’s mother felt sad at hearing this news as she was still mourning for Patson’s death.

The following day, early in the morning, people in the kingdom had already started celebrating. The palace was busy with everyone getting dressed in their best clothes and preparing for the celebration. By mid-day everyone had assembled and anxiously waited for the time when the King would stand in front of them and share the news. Some people sang traditional songs, and others dances happily.

Finally the time everyone was waiting for had come. But surprisingly a car approached the event with a special guest inside the car.. It was Patson and Camino! The King exclaimed “this is what we have been waiting for!” When Patson and Camino stepped out of the car, Patson’s mother couldn’t believe her eyes. She almost fainted. Everyone in the crowd almost collapsed with surprise. When Patson’s jealous brothers saw him they were surprised, shocked, and ashamed of themselves. “You sold your own brother to criminals. You wanted to kill him because of jealousy. Then most of you came to me and lied!!” the King said to his sons.

“Why?” he asked.

“Now my son, here you are, standing in front of me with the beautiful woman who saved your life. You are now crowned as King of the kingdom and now it is your turn to decide if your jealous brothers who made you suffer should be killed!” said the King to Patson. “If you choose not to spare their lives, then even their mothers lives should not be spared” explained the King.

Everyone waited anxiously..

Patson sighs..”ah, father, these are my brothers and I love them. Therefore, in front of all of the kingdom, I say I have forgiven my brothers and their mothers. They shall not be killed!” The jealous brothers and mothers went down and apologized to Patson and his mother. Patson’s mother was happy to see her son and she gave him a big hug.

Patson stood up in front of the people with Camino and said “now that I am the King of this kingdom, I am very happy. This is the day I have been waiting for. After all the torture I have received in Meweka village, I would like to ask the chief’s daughter if she will marry me.”

“Will you accept my proposal? asked Patson.

“Yes, I accept!” answered Camino happily. Everyone cheered for the new King and Queen, and they all started celebrating. That very day Patson and Camino got married and they lived happily every after.

The End

I have experience planting vegetables because my parents do that. Also, we have a garden at our home. Therefore, that is experience I have had in life. Apart from that experience, I also had a difficult experience when I failed my geography exam. That enabled me to learn how to cooperate with other students. I was so proud of myself when I performed well in my national exam. The memorable and happiest moment in my life will be when I reach my dream of being pilot. I will be so happy. My biggest dream is to be a pilot. I will get there through studying hard in physics, geography, and mathematics. After reaching my dream, I will help my parents to modify their cultivation system and to become professional farmers. From there they can expand the area of cultivation into a large plantation. Once I get a chance to have the power to change my country, I will build many airports in each region and some districts. This will help in the flexibility of transportation in my country.

Notable experiences in my life are, first, passing my standard seven examination and, second, entering secondary school. My most difficult experience was when I started to learn English. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to work hard. I felt proud was when I entered secondary school. My most memorable and happiest thoughts are from when I celebrated at my birthday party. My dream is to be an electrical engineer. I will get there through studying hard and doing well in science subjects. If I had the power to change my country, I would like to improve the electricity supply especially in rural areas because there are shortages of electric power.

Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.
