About

Raul is from a traditional Quechua community, Huilloc, in the highland region of the Patakancha Valley. This valley is home to some of the most famous indigenous textiles of the region and stems from a long line of rich Incan history. It is a three-hour walk uphill from Ollantaytambo, the location of the nearest high school. Raul chose to study tourism so that he can bring more tourists to his community, to educate about how "we live, work with crafts and agriculture, and raise our animals." Through his efforts, he hopes to teach his fellow community members how to generate sustainable income, selling their products to tourists and operating sustainability tours. Because of this income, writes Raul, "they can provide education and good nutrition to their small children and be good citizens by keeping our culture and Quechua language." He also hopes to learn English, and teach English to vendors, so that weavers can better sell their crafts.

Hi Raul,
It's the teacher from Brentwood College, Sue. We had a fundraising dance and are sending you some money to help with your education this year. Hope you are well and enjoying your studies. Say hello to your wonderful family from the teachers and students at Brentwood.
¡Buenas Tardes!

I wanted to give you all some updates about what is happening here in Cusco! Some months ago, we moved to the new Casa Mosqoy and I really like it here. Also, I’m still very happy with the degree I am studying, Tourism; the ancient stories about my country as well as foreign cultures really fascinate me and I cannot wait to start working in this business! But until then, I am looking forward to learning more, and hopefully participate in many trips my institute is offering for learning purposes. Some of them I cannot participate in, because they are too expensive, but I have already had the chance to go to some destinations in and outside the Sacred Valley. Right now we’re planning a trip to Arequipa and the Canyon, I’m excited!

I wish you all a great summer / winter break,

A big hug from Cusco,
Raul
Hi Adam, how are you? Many greetings from here in Cusco! I’m also very excited to talk with you and it makes me very happy to be a part of Mosqoy and that I can make my dreams come true in this project. I’m studying in Cusco the “official tourism guide” career and I’m close to finishing my second semester. At Casa Mosqoy, I’m living quite happily with all my peers and with Kristina and Juan. Here in Cusco it’s rainy season already, so it is very rainy everyday.

From Sunday to Thursday and Friday until the afternoon I’m at Casa Mosqoy. And on Fridays I go to my house after classes, which is in the Ollantaytambo district in the community of Huilloc. When I get home, I go to work in my chakra (land) with my dad. On Saturdays at five am I help my dad in the chakra until eleven. Then I come home, and then I go play soccer! On Sundays, same - I help until eleven and then I go to Ollantaytambo to play soccer again because I love playing it. And then after playing I come home to Casa Mosqoy.

Thank you so much for everything! And a warm hug for everyone!

Mwanahawa - Hi! I live in a rural farming community, we make money through agriculture and raising livestock. Now we’re also developing a living tourism program, where foreigners come to stay in our community and experience our culture firsthand. In my community we speak Quechua (the indigenous language) and we practice “ayni” (reciprocity: today for me, tomorrow for you). We come together as a community and work together for the better of the whole community. We cultivate potatoes, habas (fava beans), quinoa, corn, olluco (a yellow potato kind of), oka, etc etc. Everything that we cultivate is just for consumption - we don’t sell it. We raise also llamas (only some families), alpaca, sheep, cow/bull, chickens and roosters, and guinea pig. We are also artesans - all the women of the community work to create artesans, and all the men work their fields. They also act as “porteros” on travel adventure treks - where they carry the bags of travellers to their destinations through the Andes. It’s lovely to meet you, and greetings for your family and hugs!

Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.

Notable experiences in my life are, first, passing my standard seven examination and, second, entering secondary school. My most difficult experience was when I started to learn English. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to work hard. I felt proud was when I entered secondary school. My most memorable and happiest thoughts are from when I celebrated at my birthday party. My dream is to be an electrical engineer. I will get there through studying hard and doing well in science subjects. If I had the power to change my country, I would like to improve the electricity supply especially in rural areas because there are shortages of electric power.

The experience that I had early in life was to score good marks in my class, whereby I got good grades which encouraged me to study hard in class. The difficult experience that occurred in my life was an accident on my way back home. I learnt that I should not play again in bad areas. In my life I am proud of myself. I was getting low marks in class but now I have managed to improve a lot. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life is to play football. It exercises my body regularly and hence strengthens my body system. My dream is to become a mechanical engineer. The best way to reach it is through studying hard in school, in physics, mathematics and chemistry. If I had power in my country, I would change the education system of the country so that it helps graduates to depend more on self-employment.
