About

Zahra Suleiman, born in 1994, is at the top of her class at the Ummu Salama Secondary School. Her school is just minutes from the Umma Ayman orphanage where she has lived with her older sisters, Aisha and Habiba, for three years. After her father died in 2005, Zahra moved to an orphanage because her mother could no longer afford to support her and her four other siblings. Her mother, whom she and her siblings call Mama Aysha, sells milk at a shop. Mama Aysha still supports Zahra's youngest sister, who suffers from heart problems. Zahra's mother did not attend secondary school, speaks no English, and is often incapacitated by a recurring illness. Zahra loves to sing with her sister Aisha and considers her two older sisters to be two of her very best friends. Aside from singing, Zahra also loves to read and study. She values education because she believes that is the only way to solve many of the problems here in Tanzania. She said, "When I get an education, I help myself, the people of Tanzania, and my family." An aspiring professor, Zahra loves physics, chemistry, and the sciences in general. The hero of her school is her principal and she loves her biology teacher Mr. Ally Saleh. Without The School Fund, Zahra would not be able to go to school and pay her school fees, leaving her in alone in her quest to become a professor. She thanks The School Fund for allowing her to do more with her life and not just be married off taking care of the home.

Hi Zahra,

My name is Jaclyn, and I'm a student at Brown University in the United States who works for the School Fund. I just wanted to write to you to let you know that I admire your commitment to your education. Keep up the great work! We also share some common interests--singing, reading, studying. What type of music do you like to sing? I like to sing pop music and Broadway music.

Feel free to write me on your journal -- I check the website often!

Hope to see you soon.
Hi Zahra! Yay, congrats on passing your exams. I'm so glad to hear you did well! Where are you thinking you might go to A-Level? Are you going to try and stay in Iringa? I have finished national examination and now comes the long wait for the results.I hope the results comes out earlier this year because I do not like waiting for them.
Hi Zahra,

We have so many questions for you we don’t know how to narrow it down. What is your favorite food? Izzy’s favorite food is Hamburgers. Hamburgers are very popular in the United States. Dani’s and William’s favorite food is sushi. Sushi is also very common in the United States and is from Japan. Have you tried sushi?

It’s wonderful that you like poems. Do you like to write them? We just finished making poems about gardens, from the perspective of anything in the garden.

Congratulations on being chosen head girl of Ummu Salama! That’s great. It sounds like a big accomplishment. In our school “Dalton” instead of “Head girl of Umm Salama”, at our school we have house representatives, which are in the student government, who make changes to the school. Dani is the girl house representative for our class. Hope everything is going well.

Hi Zahra, My name is Yusuke. I got your message on your friend, Swabra Mohamed's profile page.

Thanks for teaching me about netball. I want to play it someday in the near future with you and your friends! I checked rules of the sport, and understood team-work is one of the most important factors on the sport. I assume you and your friends must be good players. because, I think, friendships between you and your friends help make your team better.

Today I just received a message from your brother, Mohamed. do you and your brother go to same secondary school?
Hi Zahra,
That sounds great. I'll look forward to seeing the picture!

Today is the big day for the national exams! Let me know how it goes! I took a big test last weekend called the LSAT. The LSAT determines whether or not I get to go to Law School to become a lawyer. I won't get the results until the end of October, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm just happy it's over :)

All the best,
Christi

Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.

Notable experiences in my life are, first, passing my standard seven examination and, second, entering secondary school. My most difficult experience was when I started to learn English. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to work hard. I felt proud was when I entered secondary school. My most memorable and happiest thoughts are from when I celebrated at my birthday party. My dream is to be an electrical engineer. I will get there through studying hard and doing well in science subjects. If I had the power to change my country, I would like to improve the electricity supply especially in rural areas because there are shortages of electric power.

The experience that I had early in life was to score good marks in my class, whereby I got good grades which encouraged me to study hard in class. The difficult experience that occurred in my life was an accident on my way back home. I learnt that I should not play again in bad areas. In my life I am proud of myself. I was getting low marks in class but now I have managed to improve a lot. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life is to play football. It exercises my body regularly and hence strengthens my body system. My dream is to become a mechanical engineer. The best way to reach it is through studying hard in school, in physics, mathematics and chemistry. If I had power in my country, I would change the education system of the country so that it helps graduates to depend more on self-employment.
