About

Mwongeli ("Janet") is the fifth born child in a family of six children. Her father passed on in 2003 leaving the burden of educating and supporting the children to their mother who is a peasant farmer. Although four of her elder siblings managed to go through secondary education through support of well-wishers, there is still a huge outstanding fees balance in the secondary school where they attended. Consequently, they never got their secondary school certificates meaning they could not proceed with further education nor get any formal employment. They do casual work for a living to support their mother in bringing up the family. Despite her humble background Mwongeli is a very confident and hardworking girl who passed well her primary education at Miini Primary School and was top in her school with 369 marks. She has been admitted to join form one at Kathiiani Girls secondary school, which is a national school. All through her primary education, she has been top in class and has won many academic prizes. She loves school because she says she strongly believes that education is an important tool to empower her to be successful in life. She wants to study hard to realize her dream and become a pilot one-day. At her age, she understands the consequences of lack of education and so one of her passions is to be successful in life so she could help her family as well as other children in her community to gain good education.

Greetings Mark and the 7th graders.
I hope all is fine. I'm grateful to write this journal to inform you that we have come to the end of first term 2017. we have closed school today on 5th and we will open on 2nd may. This term had a lot of activities; academic and field activities where the football team managed to proceed to the county level.
The weather here in Kenya is sunny and some times cold. I'm looking forward to pursue my goal.
Thank you for your continuous support and care.
Wishing you happy and enjoyable days.
THANK YOU.
Hi!Mark and the 7th graders
I hope you are fine. I'm all fine with my family except my grandmother who passed on January this year. I'm happy to inform you that we have come to the end of first part of term one. we had a whole week and we are resuming today on 6th March. I'm working hard in my studies and being focused to achieve my goal. I hope that the party will be enjoyable and successful.
I'm grateful for your continuous support and care. May God's blessing be upon you all.

WISHING YOU NICE DAYS.
thank you.
Hi Janet! Sorry it has been a while since we have last corresponded. The children are now back in classes from winter break. Our break is much shorter than in Kenya. Our Lady of the Pillar was off for two or so weeks. The weather here has been cold and icy, but not too bad overall.

We had our election in November which you may have heard about! While I spent time in Kenya, the "election" was about to happen with President Moi! That was a long time ago! The children were able to learn about politics in America during the past year or so.

The 7th grade class has two more terms left and then they are on summer break starting in June. Next school year will be the last that the children are all together as they will go their separate ways for secondary education. We plan to have a "Kenya" party sometime during the next year celebrating the commitment they had in assisting you with education. We will have Ugali and Sakuma weeki and possibly some cuckoo!

Please let us know how your term goes and best of luck! Stay in touch...

Janet
Hello Janet,

Sorry that it has been a while since we last corresponded. The children have been very busy finishing another year of school at Our Lady of the Pillar. The students have two more years left at Pillar before they go to high school (secondary school). Most of them have been together for 7 years now!

The weather here is turning very hot as the summer months are upon us. The children keep busy during the summer with different activities such as camps, sports and vacations. They are required to read different books in preparation for school starting in August, 2016.

We are happy to fund your third year in secondary! We hope that your education will provide you the opportunity to pursue your dreams of becoming a pilot one day! Please have a great second term!

Sincerely,

Mark and the 6th Grade Class
Greetings Mark
I hope all is well. I’m doing well in my studies. The weather here in Kenya is rainy
and the April holiday is over. During the holiday we had a geocaching trip to Nairobi
National park, where we found four caches. Also we had a workshop about peer pressure, which I found it to be educative. Today we are resuming to school for the 2nd term hoping to break again on August for another holiday. I’m looking forward to work extra hard in my studies. Thank you for your continued support and may God bless you.
Wishing you all the best.
From Janet.
Mark and the 6th graders

I hope all is well. I’m doing well with my studies. This term had a lot of activities; field activities and sports, where
the football and handball teams managed to reach the county level. Most of the High schools were closed on 6th April. We thank God for we have come to the end of the 1st term.
We are experiencing rainy season in Kenya, where farmers are busy ploughing and others weeding. The main rumors in Kenya is the Ruto’s case being over from the Hague.
Our country, Kenya, is busy preparing for 2017 elections. During this holiday I will do my private studies and help my parents in house chores.

All the best,
From Janet.
Janet,

I am sorry that it has been a while since we have written. The children have had a very busy beginning of 2016. They have written you a letter below. I hope school is going well!

Dear Janet,

How is your school year going? We recently had a few inches of snow, but we did not get a day off from school. Are you involved in any extracurricular activities? We just had our school wide spelling bee and a seventh grader won; beating her sister in the final round! We also just had a bake sales to raise money for you and other people in Kenya. How is the weather in your country? Over Christmas break our city, St. Louis, Missouri, had a lot of rain and flooding. What is the big news in your city or country? Our city of St. Louis just lost our American football team to the city of Los Angeles, California. This happened because the team's owner decided to move the team to Los Angeles. The other big news in our country is the national presidential election primary season.

That's all we have to say for now. We hope you are doing well!

Best of luck,

The 6th grade class Our Lady of The Pillar School
Greetings Mark

I hope all is well. How are the 6th grade students? I am very happy to be in form two this year. We had a lot of activities during the holiday like crop weeding and we also cerebrated Christmas and New Year. We are experiencing rainy season currently and our crops are doing well. My family is doing well under God’s care.
We are opening schools today after a long December holiday. I am planning to work extra hard in school.

Wishing you all a Blessed year!

Janet
Greetings Mark
I hope all is well. How are the 6th grade students? I trust that they are doing well and going on with their studies. I am sorry I did not reply your journal in time. I thank God for we have come to the end of the third term of the year. The term was short after it was disrupted by a teachers’ strike that went on for five weeks but we are happy at long last the teachers went back to class. Do you usually have strikes in your country? Our school had few activities this term because the final class was sitting for their end of high school exams. At the end of the term we did our end of year exams and I performed well. During the vacation I will help my mother in household chores and also do some private studies.

We are now experiencing rainy season. The weatherman said that it will be an el-nino rain and it might cause some damages. I am happy because so far our area has not been affected. My family is doing well under the protection of God. We are busy in the farm weeding for the crops. I am happy to hear that the 6th grades are busy with sports and academics. Pass my sincere and warm greetings to them. I am wishing you and all the 6th graders a merry Christmas and a prosperous new year 2016.

Janet
Janet,

I hope that you are doing well! We have not heard from you in a while. How is school going this year? How is the weather in Kenya this time of year? How is your family?

The children are busy at school with lots of activities going on as well. Many of them are involved in sports such as soccer, volleyball, basketball, etc. We also have programs such as choir, speech tournament, chess club that many students participate in. The children finished a quarter of studies last week and their standardized examinations in September.

We look forward to hearing back from you soon. Have a blessed week!

Mark
Janet,

Thanks for writing. The children are busy being back at school and are now "middle schoolers" which means they are in the upper grades of Pillar before leaving after 8th grade for high school. They have a new teacher this year which is always good!

I have some additional great information for you. A new student has joined the class and her parents are from Kenya! Can you believe that? I will meet her parents soon and learn more about their background and we will communicate that to you. What a small world!

Anyways, best of luck to you this semester. We will be in touch soon!

Hope all is well with you! How are the six graders now? I know they are happy to be six graders. I am doing fine together with my family. Today we are opening school for the third term of the year. I am very excited to meet my friends after the three week vacation. During the break I participated in a play called flowers together with other TSF students. It was very enjoyable.

I am wishing you and the rest of six graders a wonderful school year.

Be blessed.
Janet

I have experience planting vegetables because my parents do that. Also, we have a garden at our home. Therefore, that is experience I have had in life. Apart from that experience, I also had a difficult experience when I failed my geography exam. That enabled me to learn how to cooperate with other students. I was so proud of myself when I performed well in my national exam. The memorable and happiest moment in my life will be when I reach my dream of being pilot. I will be so happy. My biggest dream is to be a pilot. I will get there through studying hard in physics, geography, and mathematics. After reaching my dream, I will help my parents to modify their cultivation system and to become professional farmers. From there they can expand the area of cultivation into a large plantation. Once I get a chance to have the power to change my country, I will build many airports in each region and some districts. This will help in the flexibility of transportation in my country.

Notable experiences in my life are, first, passing my standard seven examination and, second, entering secondary school. My most difficult experience was when I started to learn English. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to work hard. I felt proud was when I entered secondary school. My most memorable and happiest thoughts are from when I celebrated at my birthday party. My dream is to be an electrical engineer. I will get there through studying hard and doing well in science subjects. If I had the power to change my country, I would like to improve the electricity supply especially in rural areas because there are shortages of electric power.

Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.
