About

Syombua is the last-born child in a family of eight. She completed her primary education in 2014 at Mavitini Primary School, performing exceptionally well in her final exams. Her good performance earned her a place in a good girls boarding secondary school. Her parents were so proud of her and they used all their savings to make sure that she was enrolled in the school, but luck was not on her side as their father, the only breadwinner was laid off from work. Syombua has two siblings already in day secondary schools and the challenge of paying school fees for the three children is now overwhelming to the father who has now turned to casual menial jobs to support the family. The future of Syombua seems bleak and she may not go back to school in the second term of the year. Though fate seems to rob her the opportunity to be in school, Syombua has always been determined to attain good education. For her, a good education is the only hope to secure a bright future.

Hi Lydia and Megan

It is true the strike ended and we were able to complete our third term of the year. Today we are opening school for the first term of the year after a long vacation of one and half months. Syombua
Hi Syombua,
I just saw on the internet that the strike is suspended. I hope that this is true and means you will be able to return to school!
We wish you the best of luck.
Lydia and Megan
Hi Lydia,

I am happy to know that you are praying for our country. We have now lost three weeks of learning but we trust that soon there will a solution. I am however doing private studies at home.

Syombua
Hi Laura

Thank you so much for the journal. I am doing fine and hope same applies to you. The government has closed schools due to the teachers strike. We are however optimistic that the stand off will soon be resolved and we get back to school. I have borrowed some books from the LRC so that I can do revision at home. My home is a bit far from the LRC so I can't make to come daily as it requires some bus fare.

I am happy to hear that you have started your school year! Do you have strikes in your country? I hope your students are happy to be in school. Wishing you a wonderful school year.

Syombua
Hello Syombua,

I'm sorry to hear that the teachers of Kenya are on strike. I'm a teacher myself, so I understand how frustrating it can be to work so hard and not receive the compensation that has been promised. I hope that it works out favorably for the teachers, and of course for the students! Perhaps you can use the Kenya Connect Learning Resource Center to keep up with your studies as you wait for the strike to end.

Our school year has begun and I'm enjoying my students very much. We've been reading a great story called "Ghost of the Lagoon," about a young boy who wants to kill a shark that has been terrorizing his village. It's really exciting!

I look forward to hearing from you again, and hope that your next journal entry can be all about how wonderful it is to be back at school!

Here's a picture of one of my students from last year. We were on a field trip to a farm where we planted trees and tested the water quality of the local river. I was thinking about Wangari Maathai all day!

Best,
Laura
Syombua,
I am so sorry to hear about the teacher strike! I will add my prayers to yours and hope they will be answered very soon.

Hope you are fine and doing well together with your family. I am also fine and going on well with my studies. The August holiday was fantastic. I helped my parents in household chores and also I had time to visit Kenya Connect Learning Resource center. We participated with other TFS Students in a play with the theme flowers. It was very enjoyable. Our schools opened yesterday for the third term of the year. However, most of the students have been forced to go back home due to an ongoing teachers strike. We are praying that the teachers and the government agree so that we can go back to school. The government says that, there is no money to pay teachers who were awarded a salary increase by the courts. Pass my warm regards to Megan.

Hi Lydia,
I am so happy to read your journal. It is my hope that you are doing fine together with your family. My family and I are doing fine. We have closed school for the August holiday and we shall resume back on 1st September. The second term of the year is usually the longest with lots of activities. At the end of the term we sat for our end of term exam and I scored a C. I am working hard to continue improving my grade. During the holiday I will help my parents with household chores and also do private studies.

I am very grateful to you for continuing to support my education. I will never let you down. I will work hard in school.
Lastly but not least pass my warm regards to Megan.

Wishing you all the best.
Hallo Laura (Mutanu)
Thank you for your journal I warmly received it. My family and I are doing well too. I am doing well in my studies. We closed our school last week for August holiday. During this holiday I would like to visit my sister and also attend tuition classes for extra revision. I would like to sincerely thank you and your family for paying my fees for next year. May God bless you abundantly. I am still working hard in school. Last term I had a mean grade of C and it’s my hope that next term I will improve my grade. I like to read the harry potter although I have not completed the series. Use your wand to look for the floo powder

Thank you for your support. I wish you all the best. I will be very happy to meet next summer.

Yours sincerely,

Syombua.
Dear Syombua,
I hope that you and your family are well. I'm impressed by your positive attitude and strong desire to be educated. Continuing in school is the best chance for success in life, and in know you will take full advantage of the opportunity to learn and study.
I like to read the Harry Potter books, too! I wish I had some "floo powder" so I could drop in and visit you! But, I will be back in Wamunyu next summer, perhaps we might meet then. In the meantime, work hard and be well, and know that I'm thinking about you here in Maryland, USA.

best wishes!
Hi Syombua,
We hope you and your family are well and that you are enjoying school. Please give our best to your family and keep working hard!

I have experience planting vegetables because my parents do that. Also, we have a garden at our home. Therefore, that is experience I have had in life. Apart from that experience, I also had a difficult experience when I failed my geography exam. That enabled me to learn how to cooperate with other students. I was so proud of myself when I performed well in my national exam. The memorable and happiest moment in my life will be when I reach my dream of being pilot. I will be so happy. My biggest dream is to be a pilot. I will get there through studying hard in physics, geography, and mathematics. After reaching my dream, I will help my parents to modify their cultivation system and to become professional farmers. From there they can expand the area of cultivation into a large plantation. Once I get a chance to have the power to change my country, I will build many airports in each region and some districts. This will help in the flexibility of transportation in my country.

Notable experiences in my life are, first, passing my standard seven examination and, second, entering secondary school. My most difficult experience was when I started to learn English. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to work hard. I felt proud was when I entered secondary school. My most memorable and happiest thoughts are from when I celebrated at my birthday party. My dream is to be an electrical engineer. I will get there through studying hard and doing well in science subjects. If I had the power to change my country, I would like to improve the electricity supply especially in rural areas because there are shortages of electric power.

Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.
