About

Baraka, along with his 3 other siblings, is supported by his mother who works as a subsistence farmer. His father is a retired teacher, however he left the family and is no longer in Baraka’s life. In addition to single-handedly supporting her own children, she also took in her brother’s children when he died. Neither of Baraka’s two older siblings had the opportunity to go to secondary school. Baraka hopes to be the first in his family to graduate secondary school and set a good example for his younger brother who will soon finish primary school.

Hi TSF Sponsors!

This is Samantha, the Scholarship Coordinator at Orkeeswa School, sending another update on behalf of Baraka. Baraka is now in the 10th grade, which is an important year in the Tanzanian Education System. This year is considered the last year of Ordinary Level education (O-Level), and is important in determining whether the student will continue on to Advanced Level studies (A-level), which are the final two years of secondary school education.

he 10th grade year finishes with National Examinations in December, so it is often a year filled with extra studying, review sessions, and of course the added work and stress of preparing for these important exams. I sat down with Baraka last week to hear some of his reflections on being a 10th Grade student, and here is what he had to say:

"To me, being in 10th Grade is very good because it's like a chance to have a better future. I think if I succeed, my life will be better. When I was younger, I didn't think I would make it to 10th Grade. In my family, most people only made it to 9th Grade, but I am the first one to make it this far, so my family is very proud of me."

Baraka is also thinking of ways to reduce his stress and study effectively this year.

"Now that I'm in 10th Grade, I get more time to study at home because this is the final class of my O-Level education, so I decided to tell my parents that I need to focus on my studies, and they have given me time to study. I think if I keep studying, I will improve in my subjects and in my favorite classes, Biology, Geography, and Swahili. I plan to manage my stress by studying with friends and making groups to discuss different subjects, and I have already started staying extra after school with teachers for help and tutoring."

As you can see, Baraka is a very dedicated student who will work hard to achieve his goals. Thank you for your continued support of Baraka and his education!
Dear TSF Sponsors,

This is Samantha, Orkeeswa School's Scholarship Coordinator, writing on behalf of Baraka. Baraka is now in the 9th grade, which means that he will spend the next year preparing for his National Exams that determine whether he can continue on to his higher-level studies. Baraka has been staying late after school and coming to campus on weekends to study with his friends, but has still managed to participate on the school Volleyball Team.

We are so proud of the commitment Baraka continues to show to his studies, and look forward to seeing him grow and develop as a leader at his school and in his community.

Thank you so much for your continued support of Baraka and Orkeeswa School!

With gratitude,

Samantha
Dear TSF Sponsors,

This is Emma, Orkeeswa School's Scholarship Coordinator, writing on Baraka's behalf. Baraka and his classmates are working hard in 9th Grade, after performing very well on their Form 2 (8th Grade) examinations in November. Baraka is staying busy in his classes and on the school volleyball team, and he also recently participated in Orkeeswa’s annual Science Fair.

Working in small groups, Baraka's class developed and executed their own Science Fair projects. Each project was focused on developing solutions to challenges facing the community, which was an incredible and relevant hands-on experience for them. I wanted to share some photos of Baraka working on his Science Fair project, as well as some of his reflections from the experience.

"For the Science Fair, I worked with my group to make a battery. We mixed sulfuric acid in pure water, and then put copper and zinc into the beaker. We then connected them with wires and used them to power a lightbulb. We wanted to know if it would create more power if there was more sulfuric acid, so we made one with more sulfuric acid and one with purer water and tested which one will work better. We found that the one with more water powers the lightbulb more. I really liked doing the Science Fair because it helped me to create something which I didn’t know how to do before, and something that we can use in the village where there is no electricity. To be able to make something on my own that I can use in my own life was really fun. If I can get those materials, I could make this at my house!"

Thank you for your support and encouragement of Baraka’s education at Orkeeswa School!

With gratitude,
Emma

Hi Sophie and TSF Sponsors,

I am Lisa Heinert, Director of Scholarships at Baraka's school, the Orkeeswa School. I am writing on Baraka's behalf as our internet access at school is very limited, making it hard for Baraka to post online himself. Baraka has been doing really well this year, and recently helped host several visiting groups at our school. As he reflected on this experience, he commented on the pride he has for his community and culture:

"I love my community and my culture because they are living together in a peaceful way. If someone wants to accomplish something, you know that there are many people that will help you with your goals. For example, we help each other on the farm or with grazing cattle. Everyone supports and helps one another."

Thank you for supporting Baraka's education!

With thanks,
Lisa
