About

Deolinda was born in Inhambane province. She is a quiet and friendly girl. In her free time, she likes to talk to her sister while selling cookies to earn some money. Her father died in 2004, victim of an illness. In life, he used to be a fisherman, working at the Save River. The mother left home when she was very young. No one knows where she went; if she is still alive, as she never has appeared again. She grew up with her stepmother and never went to school. When her older sister got married, she went to fetch her to live together. That is the reason why Deolinda started studying very late. As her sister is herself living in difficult situation, Deolinda needs help to be able to proceed with her secondary education. "

I was so happy to read your letter from January, 2021. But now there has been another terrible storm and I hope you are ok. Let me know if you can how you are doing. Did you pass your exam and graduate? You wrote that you would know by March. Barbara Hoffman sent me some pictures and I wonder if you got copies. I have included one I like very much.

Your auntie, and honored to be called this,

Barbara
Dear Sponsors,
How are you and your family? I am healthy. Thank you for all the support you have been giving me.
In October classes with exams started with the face-to-face classes. We have been studying with exercises that I take at school home in quarantine.
I have also taken classes online, and I hope that the pandemic will end so that all become normal again. In the future I want to be a teacher to teach other children.
So, I finish my letter, thanking TSF and the sponsors for their help, I hope they will be well with the family and stay healthy.

Dear aunty Barbara, Thank you so much for all the messages, for your beautiful pictures, you playing music, your prayers and to support my education. It is of great value to me. Things have not been easy, cyclones, pandemics and so on. I hope to graduate, but as all the education system changed since the cyclone, I will have to wait until March to know it. We have lost a lot of schooling. I wish you well and stay healthy. With gratitude,
I don't know if you will ever see this, because I know that things are very difficult in Mozambique since the storm. But I want you to know that I have worried about you and prayed for you. I was so happy to see your name and picture in The School Fund list of students for 2020. Will this be your final year? Grade 12 is graduation year in the USA. Is it for you as well? Your tuition has been paid.
I have been reading the news about the terrible storm in Mozambique on Thursday, March 14th, and am very concerned for your safety. It sounds like your area was badly affected. You are in my prayers.
Today I was able to make the final payment on your tuition for this year. I hope you are well and continuing to learn in school.
This year it will be fifty years since I graduated from secondary school. My school is holding a reunion but I think I live too far away to go. But I remember so much about my school years, and I think school made a huge difference in my life. Here is a picture from my graduation. I am the one wearing glasses.
Dear Deolinda,
Today I was able to make the last payment on your 2018 schooling, so you should be covered for next year. I have included a picture of me at my work place. I'm the older lady with the gray hair and I am playing the Viola in a pops concert with our orchestra. This is the way I can earn money for things like your schooling. I hope you are doing well and I would love to hear from you.

I send you my love.

Barb
It was such a wonderful treat to receive your letter. I did a little research on Mozambique because I really don't know much about it and learned that Portuguese is one of the languages there. What language do you use in your school? Do you speak other languages when you are not in school? I found this lovely poem in Portuguese which I would like to share with you.

Viajantes

Traziam poentes e estradas
A sede do horizonte os chamava.

- A quem pertences tu?
Quem são os da tua casa?

Assim estendia nossa avó
A caneca de água ao viajante.

So my cup of water for you is education, young traveler. May you have a safe journey.
Dear Barbara,
Thank you for congratulations. Yes, I am still in school and I am very happy to have the opportunity to study. I will study hard and to organize my future.
I hope you had a happy Easter too. We have music and cultural activities at school and I like a lot to assiste. I do not yet play any instrument, maybe one day. It is beautiful that you help children, I very much appreciate, it is important.
We have access to internet once a month with our educator that helps us translating.

A strong hug!
Happy Easter to you! Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I am a retired music teacher and still play viola in our symphony and at weddings and also do some teaching at home and through the Community College. I use the extra money I make to try to help support education fees for students like you.

I don't know if you have internet or not, but if you ever get a chance to read this, I would love to hear from you.
I hope you will see this someday. Today, that I am writing, is your birthday. I have made a contribution to your fund. So Happy Birthday and I hope you are still in school and can finish.

Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.

Notable experiences in my life are, first, passing my standard seven examination and, second, entering secondary school. My most difficult experience was when I started to learn English. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to work hard. I felt proud was when I entered secondary school. My most memorable and happiest thoughts are from when I celebrated at my birthday party. My dream is to be an electrical engineer. I will get there through studying hard and doing well in science subjects. If I had the power to change my country, I would like to improve the electricity supply especially in rural areas because there are shortages of electric power.

The experience that I had early in life was to score good marks in my class, whereby I got good grades which encouraged me to study hard in class. The difficult experience that occurred in my life was an accident on my way back home. I learnt that I should not play again in bad areas. In my life I am proud of myself. I was getting low marks in class but now I have managed to improve a lot. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life is to play football. It exercises my body regularly and hence strengthens my body system. My dream is to become a mechanical engineer. The best way to reach it is through studying hard in school, in physics, mathematics and chemistry. If I had power in my country, I would change the education system of the country so that it helps graduates to depend more on self-employment.
