About

Anne is an orphan girl in a family of four children. Her father passed on the year she was born and her mother passed on her 5th birthday. All her three elder sisters did not get a good education and all are married now. Without the care of a parent , Anne went through primary school with a lot of struggles but managed to complete in 2010. In 2011 she joined secondary school but unfortunately dropped in 2013 due to lack of school fees. Although she has been out of school for a couple of years now, her determination to complete secondary education remains solid. Anne has a strong passion to excel and believes that a good education is the basis of building a successful life. She hopes to complete secondary school and make a career in accounting.

Hi Laura and Phoebe,

How are you...on my side I am doing good. I have really done good but not my best still with my dream of becoming an accountant as you told me to be informing you about what I am doing in school I have managed to get a grade of B-. The term was too long but I thank God that he protected me. On 15th July our two dorms were burned and nothing we could safe. We lost many things like boxes,uniform,books,ma-tresses and blankets. Due to this destruction we have been asked to pay 7500/= every student. I will be going on 28 August.

I wish you all the best.
Your lovely daughter Anne.

Hi Anne,
My name is Phoebe and I am a grandmother of 7 children who are all grown. Two years ago I was priviged to travel to the LRC with Sharon Runge, my daughter. She works for "Kenya Connect". While there I was able to help catalog the books for the library with my grandaughters Emma and Megan. I know you will do well at school and glad that you enjoy reading. It is one of my favorite things to do.

Hi Laura

Happy New Year my mum… I had a wonderful vacation and a happy merry chrism-as and New Year. I helped my sister so much in home chores and I also attended church seminars for more encouraging words to sharpen me before I go back for term one of the year. I have read and done my revision. I will be going to school tomorrow morning. I wish you all the best till we meet on February.

Wishing you all the best.
Dear Laura,
It is my hope that you are well. Pass my greetings to my grandmother. Back in Kenya I am doing quite well. Since it is a rainy season there is a lot of farm work. I am happy that Kenya Connect has organized a tuition for us at the LRC from 9:00 am to 1 pm which I am finding it very helpful in addition to the books that I often check out for revision from the library.
I am really moved by how you worked hard for Hilary though she did not win the elections. Sorry for that but we hope that the president elect will work for the good of all people since the constitution is governing him.
Over this holiday we shall celebrate the Christmas and New year. Do you have this kind of celebrations in America?
Thank you very much for your love, care and continued support to my education. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy new year 2017.
Anne
Dear Anne,
I'm sorry for not writing back sooner. I traveled from Washington, D.C. across America and arrived at my mother's house in my hometown of Flagstaff, Arizona. It took 5 days. My mom was so happy to see me on Sunday afternoon, October 22nd! Once I recovered and got used to the high altitude here, 7000 ft., I went to work for Hillary Clinton's campaign. I knocked on doors, talked to people, answered their questions and helped them know where to go vote. I even met one elderly blind woman who said she couldn't vote because her early ballot had not arrived and she had no ride to the polls. So I took her, and helped her fill out her ballot.
I am heartbroken over the results of the American election. I still cannot believe that Trump is our president-elect. But I am getting right back to work. We are going to organize to get our country back on track to being a compassionate nation of thoughtful, educated, progressive citizens.
I do hope that you enjoy your winter holiday. Please give my greetings to James, Patrick, and Cyrus at Kenya Connect, and your sister.
Be sure to check out some books from the Kenya Connect library to read while your are on vacation from school. There are some really great books there!
I hope to see you when I am back in Wamunyu, sometime between February 5 and May 7, 2017.
Peace.
Dear Laura,

I am back for December holiday. The term was quite well and I thank my God for protection and giving me a lovely mother.

I am really missing your smile and encouraging words you gave to me…I promise I will do anything to make you proud.

I am planning to read very hard over the vacation and help my guardian in home chores. It is my hope that when you will come we will meet and talk more. Wishing you a merry Christmas.

I love you so much… goodbye.

Ann
Dear Anne,

It was a great pleasure to visit with you at the Learning Resource Center. I'm inspired by your desire to learn and grow. Sorry we weren't able to have lunch together that day. I assume that you realized you had to leave for school so as not to be late, and that's why you didn't return to the LRC to meet me for lunch. Don't despair, we shall have another opportunity! I will be in Kenya until October 1. Then I plan to return in February, 2017 and stay until mid-May. So, we will have our lunch date at a later time. Let's be sure to take a photograph of the two of us together next time!
Best wishes and see you soon,

Laura

Jambo my darling Kenyan daughter! I'm so happy to hear from you. I'm glad to hear about your diligent work at school.
The trip to the Rift Valley sounds lovely. That is a famous place, many people long to see it. Maybe one day I will have that chance, too.
I am on my way to Mombasa with my friend Florence. She is the head teacher at Ngului Primary School. We plan to swim in the Indian Ocean and relax for a few days.
I will be back in Wamunyu late Friday night. I hope we can meet for lunch over the weekend, if you are available.
All my love,
Mama Mutanu

All the best,

Hi Matt,
Greetings,
I'm doing well hoping that you are also fine. This is now the end of April holiday. The holiday was really enjoyable and busy. During this holiday I learned about geocaching, which was an interesting lesson. We visited Nairobi National Park to carry out the practical. At the park we saw wild animals like Lion and Buffalos. It came to my attention that geocaching was not only educative but also a game. Also in Kenya Connect we had a workshop where I learnt about puberty and career choice. I really enjoyed the talk about how our body changes. The lesson was very interesting I really liked it. Now that the holiday has come to an end I'm looking forward to resume school tomorrow for the second term determined to improve on my studies. Thank you so much for your support and may God bless you.
Good bye.

Anne

Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.

Notable experiences in my life are, first, passing my standard seven examination and, second, entering secondary school. My most difficult experience was when I started to learn English. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to work hard. I felt proud was when I entered secondary school. My most memorable and happiest thoughts are from when I celebrated at my birthday party. My dream is to be an electrical engineer. I will get there through studying hard and doing well in science subjects. If I had the power to change my country, I would like to improve the electricity supply especially in rural areas because there are shortages of electric power.

The experience that I had early in life was to score good marks in my class, whereby I got good grades which encouraged me to study hard in class. The difficult experience that occurred in my life was an accident on my way back home. I learnt that I should not play again in bad areas. In my life I am proud of myself. I was getting low marks in class but now I have managed to improve a lot. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life is to play football. It exercises my body regularly and hence strengthens my body system. My dream is to become a mechanical engineer. The best way to reach it is through studying hard in school, in physics, mathematics and chemistry. If I had power in my country, I would change the education system of the country so that it helps graduates to depend more on self-employment.
