Genesis lives with her mother and an elder sister, who is 20. They live in a small house built by the government but had to take out a loan for it, which they are now working to pay back. Genesis is a very bright student and managed to get a place at one of the best state secondary schools in the city. This means a long daily journey from her house on the outskirts, as the school is in the middle of the city, but she says she doesn't mind this (most days!). She enjoys most subjects at school, and is also very fond of animals. This is why she would one day like to become a vet.

My experience of Covid has not been the best. It is my last year at school and I was looking forward to the graduation ceremony and to outings with my friends, and I couldn't do any of that. On the other hand, I learnt that self-education needs a lot of effort. Some teachers have helped us a lot, others not very much. It has also been a lesson for life. Closing down some of life has meant that the planet has recovered a bit - the oceans are cleaner and there is more wildlife than usual. I am very grateful for everybody's help - thank you!
I'm now in my final year of secondary school. I've been studying in this school for six years and have had lots of good experiences and learned a lot. It's a school which is very demanding and I'm grateful for the opportunity of being there. I'm happy to be coming to the end of this stage of my life and looking forward to facing new challenges.

  • Padre

Padre excelled in primary school and was ranked number four in his class. However, with six children to take care of, his family struggles to make ends meet. There are very few resources at home and they often do not have enough food to feed their children. Since none of Padre’s older siblings had the opportunity to go to secondary school, he hopes to be the first in his family to graduate so that he can give back to his family and his community.
