Day in and day out, Namnyak is always smiling. The oldest in a large family, Namnyak has many responsibilities beyond her studies: taking care of her younger siblings, collecting firewood, fetching water, working on the farm, cooking for her family and washing clothes are just a few. Her parents are subsistence farmers; they grow maize and beans and keep a few animals to support their family. She has to walk several hours to and from school each day as she lives in one of the farthest villages. However, Namnyak never complains about all these responsibilities! She is a engaged student, kind friend to all, and a hard worker. She loves to study biology and dreams of becoming a nurse: "I love biology because it will help me become a nurse one day. If I study cells and viruses I will know what is making someone sick, and what causes diseases. I want to become a nurse so I can help my community to be healthy." With her work ethic and caring nature, we know Namnyak will be a natural for the job.

Dear TSF,

This is Tunu, the Communications and Development Manager at Orkeeswa School.

I hope that you are all doing well in the midst of this crazy time in our world. Orkeeswa students have returned from their winter break, and are already busy with classes, activities, and athletics. With the new school year underway, I wanted to give you an update on Namnyak, who is doing well this year in the 11th grade.

As part of our Advanced-Level program (11th and 12th grades) at Orkeeswa School, each student has the opportunity to serve and lead the younger Orkeeswa students through tutoring, sports, and activities. Through Orkeeswa School Mentorship program, our 11th grade class also has the opportunity to lead weekly lessons and activities with our newest class of 6th graders. It has been great to see our students develop and realize their leadership potential at school and in their community through these meaningful interactions!

We sat down with Namnyak to reflect on her leadership at school and in her community, I thought you would like to hear what she has to say!

"Leadership means being a leader to oneself first. Also being a role model to others and being a responsible person. At school, I’m a class leader and I have a responsibility of helping my classmates, but I also make sure that they know their responsibilities as well. Outside the classes, I help other students by ensuring that they behave well. Out of school, I teach leadership to my family. I live with my siblings and my relatives whom I teach ways to behave to elders. I am the first born in my family and the first one to have this level of education. Because of that, I make sure I practice positive things so that my siblings do the same. I also talk to my parents most times on the ways they discipline my siblings and others because I have learned in school about positive discipline and seen how it works in our school so I try teaching my parents to practice it."

"I do mentoring to the younger students at school and outside the school by first, making sure they can trust me and then help them with anything they are going through or seek help from me.”

Your scholarship provides the experiences, resources and encouragement needed for Namnyak to reach her full potential as a scholar and a leader, demonstrated in her engagement and influence in the community and on campus as an A-Level student.

I hope this email finds you well and healthy, especially during this difficult time in our world. As you may be aware, Orkeeswa School reopened in June after we made several changes on campus to ensure the safety of our students, staff, and community. 

Namnyak is doing well and is excited to be back in school catching up with her studies. She is currently focused on covering her 11th Grade topics, and in Life Skills she is learning about Decision Making - choices and its consequences. She has written a letter to check in with you and your families, as well as share with you an update on what she is doing in class. You should receive the letter soon!

We look forward to keeping you updated on Namnyak's progress this year, and thank you for your continued support in her education. We are so thankful for your partnership, which has been even more critical this year during the pandemic, ensuring we can stay on track with our mission to provide the highest-quality education to our students.

This is Tunu, the Communications and Development Manager at Orkeeswa School.

I hope you are doing well and staying safe in the midst of the ongoing pandemic.

In case you didn't get our newsletter, Orkeeswa School has taken the following steps in response to the COVID-19 pandemic:
* Closed the school on Monday, March 16 in anticipation that cases would soon be confirmed in Tanzania
* Ahead of that, we educated students and staff about the virus, social distancing, and other preventative measures they could start taking immediately
* Created and distributed Swahili informational materials to share with families and community members.
If you have any questions about Orkeeswa during this time, please let us know.

While this is a unique time globally, we are working hard to make sure we keep things on track with Orkeeswa School, and that includes keeping our Scholarship Program updated and in full operation.

Namnyak has participated in some unique opportunities that we would like to share with you.
As you know, she has completed her 10th grade studies and sat for her National Exams last fall. Results from the Ministry of Education are in, and congratulations are in order as the class has 100% pass mark. We are very proud of them!

While waiting for their exam results, Namnyak and her classmates participated in an introductory workshop for Orkeeswa School's Entrepreneurship Program. Students were introduced to the world of entrepreneurship through hands-on and practical lessons that taught them how to think like entrepreneurs, write a business plan, and present their ideas to investors, partners, or community leaders. Namnyak and her partners’ business was a Jewelry store called ‘Sidai Culture’ (Sidai means Fine in Maasai) specialized in making making and selling Maasai cultural jewels.

After the winter break, Namnyak was back on campus and will spend the next five months doing Orkeeswa's Community Service, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Program. Namnyak and her classmates will each complete at least 300 hours of community service in local primary schools, participate in an innovation workshop with our partner organization, Twende, to design prototypes that address community challenges, and build on their recent Entrepreneurship workshop by exploring entrepreneurship as a career pathway and further develop their business ideas.

As you can see, this period of time between the 10th and 11th grades is a unique opportunity for Namnyak and her classmates to get hands-on, real-world experience in the community as leaders and entrepreneurs, and we are excited to share with you more about her experience later this year!

After the programs, Namnyak and her classmates will continue with their final two years of secondary education at Orkeeswa School. A few may continue at other secondary schools, and some will enroll in post-secondary certificate programs for things like Elementary Education, Agriculture, Nursing, etc. We look forward to keeping you updated on Namnyak’s progress and her plans moving forward.

    Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.

    Notable experiences in my life are, first, passing my standard seven examination and, second, entering secondary school. My most difficult experience was when I started to learn English. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to work hard. I felt proud was when I entered secondary school. My most memorable and happiest thoughts are from when I celebrated at my birthday party. My dream is to be an electrical engineer. I will get there through studying hard and doing well in science subjects. If I had the power to change my country, I would like to improve the electricity supply especially in rural areas because there are shortages of electric power.

    The experience that I had early in life was to score good marks in my class, whereby I got good grades which encouraged me to study hard in class. The difficult experience that occurred in my life was an accident on my way back home. I learnt that I should not play again in bad areas. In my life I am proud of myself. I was getting low marks in class but now I have managed to improve a lot. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life is to play football. It exercises my body regularly and hence strengthens my body system. My dream is to become a mechanical engineer. The best way to reach it is through studying hard in school, in physics, mathematics and chemistry. If I had power in my country, I would change the education system of the country so that it helps graduates to depend more on self-employment.
