Hi Sharon! hope you are fine . We are now reopening our schools for the second term and am happy because i am going to resume to my normal live of reading. I think it will be different because of washing hands and wearing face mask but i hope all will be good. The mentor series had helped us very much such that it build our confidence and now I can talk to a group of people without fear. I have also learned a lot when we were at home and hope I will challenge the exams. I have also been reading news papers, magazines and storybooks to be an informed student and also become a fluent english speaker. In school am going to work hard to achieve my dream and support other needy students in their education. In Kenya it rained and we have planted food crops like; maize, beans, cowpeas and peas. What about in your place? As you told me I will start writing articles while in the secondary school because I would like to be a unique journalist. Goodbye
Hello Peter!

It's always good to hear from you. Today in Maryland it's quite rainy and cold. It's clear that the seasons are changing.

I am glad you are planning to be a journalist. It's an important career. I read several newspapers each day so I can become a more informed citizen. I'm wondering if you would like to write an article for Kenya Connect about the Mentor series. We always like to share stories and information with our friends and supporters of why Kenya Connect matters. Perhaps you can write an article about the Mentor Series, why it's important, how it's been helpful to students, and what you think it's accomplishing. You can include quotes on what your friends think about it and any parts that you thought were particularly helpful. I am sure James, Monicah, Patrick or Esther could work with you on it. Many young people in America who want to be journalists start writing articles in secondary school as practice.

Take care and keep reading!
Sharon
Hi Sharon! I have been enjoying the Thursday mentor series because is enjoyable and helpful to our lives. Am also focusing on my education by borrowing books from our library and reading them keenly. The online classes are ongoing well and we are excited because when schools will be reopened our performance in school will be higher than that of the other students. As i saw from the picture is fascinating estate because is hilly and covered with green vegetation. It is located in which type of climatic region? I would like to visit the estate and learn more about it. Am also chasing my dream career which is to be a national journalist. The pictures are interesting to me and if you have more please sent to me. Goodbye
Hello Peter! Have you been enjoying the Thursday mentor series? I hope they have been helpful and given you more ideas about how to shape your future!

I realized that I never answered your question. Peaches are a sweet fruit kind of like mangoes, but not quite as big or sweet. They have a smaller stone and grow mostly in July and September. Peppers are also called capsicums-- that might be the word for them in your country and pickles are fermented cucumbers.

Right now I am in the state of Vermont. It's very hilly here and the green leaves are changing colors to red, yellow and orange. In a few weeks they will fall off the tree before winter. Last weekend we went to see some covered bridges which were built in the 1800s. Attached is a picture of me and my mom at one of them. It's quite hilly here so it's hard running. James Musyoka visited Vermont one time with me. He can tell you more about the state.

I hope the on-line classes are going well. I am glad that the team were able to arrange them. Take care! Sharon
Hi Sharon! I hope you are fine. We are at home engaging in different activities and also reading. We are also protecting ourselves against the pandemic by wearing face mask and keeping social distance. I have prepared a kitchen garden and planted vegetables like kale and spinach. I am also reading storybooks which I borrow from our KC library. Some of them are; The Miracle Merchant, Dial A Ghost and How leopard became a jungle animal.Am also borrowing revision materials which I use when revising. As you have advised me, I will ask to read newspapers at the library. I also do morning runs a distance of four kilometres and take less than twenty minutes. Am focusing on reading so as to achieve my dream which is to be a national journalist. I also have few questions for you. What is peaches, peppers and pickles. Have a good time and goodbye Sharon!
Hello Peter! We live in a house that has a small yard. This year we planted tomatoes, eggplants (aubergines), peppers and herbs. I attached a few pics. We don't have much land so we do container plants. We've harvested tomatoes, peppers and herbs so far. The eggplants are still growing. We also went to a nearby farm and picked peaches. Tonight I will "can" them which means I cook them a bit and process them in a jar to eat later in the year. Yesterday my husband canned pickles and last weekend we made blackberry jam.

I read Frindle too! It's such a clever book. I'm glad to hear you're reading. I read everyday and I also read a newspaper. You should ask to read newspapers at the LRC too. I also like reading National Geographic magazines. They have so much interesting information and beautiful photographs.

I just got back from my morning run. I usually run 5 days a week. It's a time to clear my head, think about work, and see the neighborhoods, plus it always gives me extra energy. I've run in 4 of the Running to Read that Kenya Connect hosts. Hopefully next year I'll be back to do that.

Keep reading and studying during the pandemic and help out at home as much as you can. Take care, Sharon

Thank you .

Habari Peter! Thank you for writing! I am sorry that school is shutdown for you, but I'm happy to hear you are wearing your mask. During this time of shutdown, I hope you are borrowing and reading books from the LRC library. Reading will open up new worlds and prepare you for school when it reopens.

I live in Maryland which is on the east coast of the US. I was supposed to be in Kenya right now, but do to the pandemic, I can't travel. This year we planted a vegetable garden in our yard. We are growing tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and different herbs. We also have a lot of flowers which the bees and butterflies love. I have two children. One just graduated from University and just got a job and the other lives in England and is going to University for their Ph.D.

I have been reading a lot during the pandemic. I just finished a book last night and will start a new one today. The books I read give me new insights into the world and sometimes make me laugh. I read serious stories and also stories that are just fun.

I hope during this time out of school you can read, maybe practice writing by keeping a journal, and see if you can help the KC staff with some projects. Take good care. Sharon

Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.

Notable experiences in my life are, first, passing my standard seven examination and, second, entering secondary school. My most difficult experience was when I started to learn English. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to work hard. I felt proud was when I entered secondary school. My most memorable and happiest thoughts are from when I celebrated at my birthday party. My dream is to be an electrical engineer. I will get there through studying hard and doing well in science subjects. If I had the power to change my country, I would like to improve the electricity supply especially in rural areas because there are shortages of electric power.

The experience that I had early in life was to score good marks in my class, whereby I got good grades which encouraged me to study hard in class. The difficult experience that occurred in my life was an accident on my way back home. I learnt that I should not play again in bad areas. In my life I am proud of myself. I was getting low marks in class but now I have managed to improve a lot. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life is to play football. It exercises my body regularly and hence strengthens my body system. My dream is to become a mechanical engineer. The best way to reach it is through studying hard in school, in physics, mathematics and chemistry. If I had power in my country, I would change the education system of the country so that it helps graduates to depend more on self-employment.
