Sechota has lived in Monduli Town with her grandmother and grandfather since her parents died many years ago. Her grandparents support her and her 5 other siblings on their subsistence farm. However, because they are quite old and have little money, they struggle to contribute to their grandchildren’s education. Sechota’s older sister finished secondary school and is now studying computer science at a certificate program. Sechota hopes to be able to also succeed in secondary school so that she can send her younger siblings to primary school.

This is Samantha, Orkeeswa School's Scholarship Coordinator, writing on behalf of Sechota. Sechota is now in the final year of her Secondary School education, and has been studying very hard for her upcoming National Exams that will determine whether or not she can continue her studies in college.

Sechota's commitment to her studies is truly remarkable, and your support is what has made her education possible. Sechota made a holiday card for you in her Art Class last month, and I wanted to share it with you here!

This is Emma, the Scholarship Coordinator at Orkeeswa School, writing on Sechota's behalf while our internet access at school is still limited. Sechota is finishing up her Form Five year at Orkeeswa, and we are so proud of all that she has accomplished this year.

As part of our Advanced-Level program (11th and 12th grades) at Orkeeswa School, each student has the opportunity to serve and lead the younger students through tutoring, sports, activities and in mentorship. Sechota has fully embraced this aspect for Form Five and I had a chance to sit down with her and hear her thoughts about her own leadership abilities and opportunities.

"As a leader at school, I like when I am teaching the 6th grade students English and Life Skills. In Life Skills, we were teaching them about confidence and time management, as well as making sure that they are studying hard to pass their national exams and preparing for their futures by working hard now. I really liked working with the 6th graders because it gave me a good relationship with them and let me be closer with them. I think I can be a leader to them, because I have had many of the experiences that they are having now. I can give advice and maybe it will help them.

I think I learned most of my leadership skills from my mother. My mother is the one who has taken care of me my entire life. I was raised by a single parent and the way that she cared for me and my siblings has made her a big role model for me. She was always giving me guidance to go to school and do good things while avoiding bad things, so she taught me so much and led me in my own life."

Sechota will be graduating Form Five at the end of this term, and we are excited to watch as she continues her leadership in Form Six!

    Pauline Moraa Pauline is a shy, bright, seven-year-old who is currently doing well in school after recovering from an unsafe family situation. Her loving grandparents sent her to Beyond Fistula due to concerns for her safety, and she has now happily adjusted to life here. The older women at Beyond Fistula are like her big sisters, and she loves her new 'family', as well as the opportunity to pursue her education.
