Hi Sharon! hope you are fine . We are now reopening our schools for the second term and am happy because i am going to resume to my normal live of reading. I think it will be different because of washing hands and wearing face mask but i hope all will be good. The mentor series had helped us very much such that it build our confidence and now I can talk to a group of people without fear. I have also learned a lot when we were at home and hope I will challenge the exams. I have also been reading news papers, magazines and storybooks to be an informed student and also become a fluent english speaker. In school am going to work hard to achieve my dream and support other needy students in their education. In Kenya it rained and we have planted food crops like; maize, beans, cowpeas and peas. What about in your place? As you told me I will start writing articles while in the secondary school because I would like to be a unique journalist. Goodbye
Hello Peter!

It's always good to hear from you. Today in Maryland it's quite rainy and cold. It's clear that the seasons are changing.

I am glad you are planning to be a journalist. It's an important career. I read several newspapers each day so I can become a more informed citizen. I'm wondering if you would like to write an article for Kenya Connect about the Mentor series. We always like to share stories and information with our friends and supporters of why Kenya Connect matters. Perhaps you can write an article about the Mentor Series, why it's important, how it's been helpful to students, and what you think it's accomplishing. You can include quotes on what your friends think about it and any parts that you thought were particularly helpful. I am sure James, Monicah, Patrick or Esther could work with you on it. Many young people in America who want to be journalists start writing articles in secondary school as practice.

Take care and keep reading!
Sharon

It was 2009 when I started standard 1. I was very happy to start primary level. When my mother died, it was really painful to me. It is a gap which will never be filled in my heart. After the funeral, I continued my studies. I am thankful I completed the term and passed the exam to standard 2. When I was in class 2, my father was my hope but after my mother's death, he changed and did not take care of me. Instead I was raised by my relatives. In 2010, my father died too and I have lived with my grandmother ever since. I was my parents' only child. Because of these challenges, I have learned that education is the best of all worldly things, better than money which gets used up. Education is the best heritage. I will never give up the chance for education. I really appreciate being selected as a scholarship beneficiary of The School Fund. I will work hard, very hard, to achieve my dream and help less fortunate people

My dream is to become an accountant and I will get there by studying hard. The moment that I felt proud of myself is when I learned that I passed the Standard 7 National Exams. The happiest moment in my life is when I was selected by the Ebenezer Seminary for my secondary school education. The most difficult experience I had is the death of my my best friend. He died of malaria. Malaria is a disease that can be treated. My friend could be alive if he got proper medical treatment. I learn from his death that we need to help our poor friends with their basic needs. I plan to help the orphans to make sure they can reach their dreams as I will. I will also contribute some of my salary to help the disabled people after my dream comes true.

Carmen is one of our most dedicated students. She attends all of our events and meetings, and is eager to begin her studies. After graduating high school, she worked as a waitress in Puka Rumi, one of the best restaurants in town. Here, under the mentorship of renowned chef Alejo, she fell in love with the art of cooking and hopes to someday open her own restaurant. In her spare time, she is an athlete. Her favourite sport is volleyball, and she was the only female to compete in last year's Ollantaytambo weightlifting competition! She comes from a humble campesino (rural indigenous) family. Since her father passed away 16 years ago, she and her nine siblings have since been raised by her single mother.
