About

Abigael Mwelu is the second born child in a family of seven children. Her father deserted the family and went to live in Mombasa leaving the burden of caring and educating the children to their mother who does casual jobs like washing people clothes and digging to fend for the family. Her elder sister managed to complete high school through the support of well-wishers but she could not proceed to college and got married. Abigael has had to repeat several classes due to lack of payment for school dues but all along she has been among the top performing students. Despite her humble background Abigael is hardworking and has never given up in all these circumstances. She did her primary education examination at Sofia Primary School and managed to score 331 marks. She has been admitted to join form one at Kilembwa secondary school. Abigael believes that education is the only way to get out of the poverty cycle. She is determined to have a successful life in future that will allow her to help her family and also other needy children to achieve their goals.

Dear Abigael,

I am so glad to hear that you had such a successful school year. Congratulations! You are well on your way to reaching your goals and your dreams. My family just celebrated the American holiday of Thanksgiving -- a harvest festival, as we are grateful for the gifts of the earth and other blessings, even if most Americans today do not grow their own food. My daughters (Maggie and Alice), my husband and I spent time with my mother-in-law, my husband's brother and his wife, and our 4 small nieces and nephews. And now we have 3 more weeks of school before our Winter vacation.

I hope you will be able to go to the LRC while you are home from school - please say hello to Mr. Musyoka and Cyrus for me!

I look forward to hearing more about what you are studying next term, and wish you all the best.

Sincerely,

Mwende (Katie)

I am also taking my studies at home so that I may continue improving my performance. The term was long but we managed to finish it well. Also it had so many activities such as; ball games and also athletics. I participated in ball games especially in football. I enjoyed a lot. This term I had a slight improvement in my performance. I hope to do much better than that coming next term. We will be able to open our school before the end of this month; that it will be on 29/8/2016.Greet your family very much. I wish to thank you very much for your support. May God bless you abundantly.

Hi Abigael - I apologize for not writing back sooner. I find I have trouble remembering all my computer passwords! But I finally managed to logon, and I was so happy to read your news. Congratulations on all your hard work and on improving your exam performance this term. Your perseverance will pay off! We have been on summer break, but I start back next week, helping to train the new teachers at our school and welcome new students, before classes actually begin at the very end of August. I wish I had been able to come back to Wamunyu this summer. I so enjoyed getting to know you a little bit and working with the LRC staff last summer.
Do you get any news about the Olympics? It is great to see athletes from around the world competing and playing each other. I especially enjoy watching the swimming and track races. What ball games do you play?
I hope the rest of your term finished well, and I will try to do better about keeping in touch. May God be with you -

Warm wishes,
Mwende (Kathleen)

ABIGAIL MUSYOKA.
Hello, Its my hope you are doing well together with your family. My family and I are in good health. Happy New Year!

I am happy to hear from you. During Christmas Holiday my family had some special food like chapati and chicken stew. In my family I am the second born and so I have siblings whom I love them very much .In my garden am growing foods like; maize, cowpeas, pigeon peas, beans and green grams. I read as many books as possible for fun and others for improving my communication. The LRC has really helped me.

We will be opening school tomorrow for the first term of the year! I am very excited to meet my friends after the vacation. I will be starting my second year in high school and I will be working extra hard to continue excelling in my academics.

My family and I wish you a prosperous year and blessings from the Almighty God. May God be with you.

Love,
Abigail Musyoka.
Merry Christmas, Abigael! I was so happy to hear from you. I am sorry about the teachers' strike, but proud of you for persevering and passing your final exams anyway. Good for you! When does school start up again after the holiday?

We also are on winter break for two weeks, starting up again just after New Year's Day. It is supposed to be cold here during this season, but it has been unusually warm. Normally we need heavy coats and hats and gloves to walk to Church on Christmas Eve, but this year we could go in short sleeves! I am sure it will get colder soon, though, and probably snow in January and February. My family eats peppermint ice cream with chocolate sauce on Christmas eve. Does your family have any special foods or traditions at this time of year?

My daughters and husband and I spent Christmas with my parents and aunts and cousins in New York City, where I grew up, and then visited my mother-in-law and nieces in Pennsylvania -- lots of wonderful family time. Do you have siblings? Are they home with you? You say you are busy attacking the weeds -- what is growing in your garden at this time of year? Nothing grows here in the winter - - no leaves on the trees at all. Do you have time to read any books for fun, from the LRC? That is what I always like to do during the holidays.

I am thinking of you and wishing you a very Happy New Year. All the best for 2016!

Love,
Mwende (Katie)
Hello Kathleen Mwende

Hope you have been doing well. On my side I have been doing well with good health. We have closed school for December Holiday. The third term was very short due to a teachers strike that paralyzed learning for four weeks. However we managed to successfully complete the year with our final year exams that allowed us to be promoted to the next grade.

Now we are at home helping our parents in digging out weeds and uprooting them. Still, as we are doing all these activities am also working hard in my studies, knowing that success is doing the extra. During the rain season, what activities do you do in your area? Which season are you in? Greet all you family members and have a nice holiday full of blessings. Wishing you merry Christmas and happy new year.
Hi Mwende,
I am going on very well, at the same time enjoying my August Holiday. From the time we closed the school I still see my school friends who are near my home. The ones who are far away from my home I only see them when we open school. Yes, at the LRC there are two things exciting happening; one of them is we are acting a play about flowers and we are also revising what we learnt in school with other TSF funded students. Also I am reading some books for fun as well as using the computers.

This my chorus, Oh narrow gate, gate to Heaven without humbling your heart you cannot pass through narrow gate.

Unfortunately the photo did not come through. Wishing you all the best. Pass my regards to your daughters.
Abigael
Hi Abigail -
I hope you are enjoying your August holiday! Do you see any of your school friends during the break, or do they all live too far away? Is anything exciting happening at the LRC since we left? I hope you will have time to read some books for fun, and to use the computers, during the holidays. I wish I could hear your chorus sing sometime -- that would be wonderful!
Right now I am with my daughters visiting my parents in the mountains, because it is very hot at home in Maryland, but we will return to our house next week and start getting ready for the new school year. We do not have any opener exams, but our students do have to read 3 books and complete 10 hours of math on the computer before school starts.
Were you able to see the photo I tried to send of you and me and Diana at the LRC? I was not sure if it came through.
Peace and blessings -
Mwends

Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.

Notable experiences in my life are, first, passing my standard seven examination and, second, entering secondary school. My most difficult experience was when I started to learn English. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to work hard. I felt proud was when I entered secondary school. My most memorable and happiest thoughts are from when I celebrated at my birthday party. My dream is to be an electrical engineer. I will get there through studying hard and doing well in science subjects. If I had the power to change my country, I would like to improve the electricity supply especially in rural areas because there are shortages of electric power.

The experience that I had early in life was to score good marks in my class, whereby I got good grades which encouraged me to study hard in class. The difficult experience that occurred in my life was an accident on my way back home. I learnt that I should not play again in bad areas. In my life I am proud of myself. I was getting low marks in class but now I have managed to improve a lot. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life is to play football. It exercises my body regularly and hence strengthens my body system. My dream is to become a mechanical engineer. The best way to reach it is through studying hard in school, in physics, mathematics and chemistry. If I had power in my country, I would change the education system of the country so that it helps graduates to depend more on self-employment.
