Day in and day out, Namnyak is always smiling. The oldest in a large family, Namnyak has many responsibilities beyond her studies: taking care of her younger siblings, collecting firewood, fetching water, working on the farm, cooking for her family and washing clothes are just a few. Her parents are subsistence farmers; they grow maize and beans and keep a few animals to support their family. She has to walk several hours to and from school each day as she lives in one of the farthest villages. However, Namnyak never complains about all these responsibilities! She is a engaged student, kind friend to all, and a hard worker. She loves to study biology and dreams of becoming a nurse: "I love biology because it will help me become a nurse one day. If I study cells and viruses I will know what is making someone sick, and what causes diseases. I want to become a nurse so I can help my community to be healthy." With her work ethic and caring nature, we know Namnyak will be a natural for the job.

Dear TSF,

This is Tunu, the Communications and Development Manager at Orkeeswa School.

I hope that you are all doing well in the midst of this crazy time in our world. Orkeeswa students have returned from their winter break, and are already busy with classes, activities, and athletics. With the new school year underway, I wanted to give you an update on Namnyak, who is doing well this year in the 11th grade.

As part of our Advanced-Level program (11th and 12th grades) at Orkeeswa School, each student has the opportunity to serve and lead the younger Orkeeswa students through tutoring, sports, and activities. Through Orkeeswa School Mentorship program, our 11th grade class also has the opportunity to lead weekly lessons and activities with our newest class of 6th graders. It has been great to see our students develop and realize their leadership potential at school and in their community through these meaningful interactions!

We sat down with Namnyak to reflect on her leadership at school and in her community, I thought you would like to hear what she has to say!

"Leadership means being a leader to oneself first. Also being a role model to others and being a responsible person. At school, I’m a class leader and I have a responsibility of helping my classmates, but I also make sure that they know their responsibilities as well. Outside the classes, I help other students by ensuring that they behave well. Out of school, I teach leadership to my family. I live with my siblings and my relatives whom I teach ways to behave to elders. I am the first born in my family and the first one to have this level of education. Because of that, I make sure I practice positive things so that my siblings do the same. I also talk to my parents most times on the ways they discipline my siblings and others because I have learned in school about positive discipline and seen how it works in our school so I try teaching my parents to practice it."

"I do mentoring to the younger students at school and outside the school by first, making sure they can trust me and then help them with anything they are going through or seek help from me.”

Your scholarship provides the experiences, resources and encouragement needed for Namnyak to reach her full potential as a scholar and a leader, demonstrated in her engagement and influence in the community and on campus as an A-Level student.

His mother has been supporting the family through casual jobs. Raymond dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon in future because he wants to help people with mental problems. Also, there are few neurosurgeons in the country. He is very outgoing and enjoys drawing to improve his skills. Despite the challenges he faced, he believed in hard work and emerged as the best student in his school. For sure, hard work never goes unrewarded.
