About

Lilian is the last-born child in a family of six. Her father was involved in a motorbike accident and has been unable to support the family. Most of the elder siblings dropped out of school and are unemployed. Lilian is so determined to achieve her dream of becoming a doctor. Her good performance in her exams did not come on a silver platter. She had to wake up early in the morning to go to school to utilize electricity at school. At other times, she studied under the moonlight, as there was no source of light at home. She believes that without struggle there is no progress.

Hi Lilian!

I am sorry that it has been so long since I wrote to you. I am very glad that you are on your way back to school. How long is your journey? How do you get to your school, and when is your next break for visiting home? I hope that your teachers are kind to you and teach you a lot. Please keep writing to me - I love to hear from you!

I just started teaching a new school year, too. I work with my students on reading and writing. They mostly use computers. Do you have access to a computer?

Have a good school year. Work hard and be kind to others.

Take care & stay safe and healthy,
Marisa

Dear Lilian,

Congratulations on completing Form 2! That is quite an accomplishment! Thank you for telling me about what your life is like at home. It sounds like you are very busy when you are on holidays from school. Now that you are starting Form 3, what are your favorite parts about school? Do you have a favorite subject? What are your goals for learning this year? I am a writing teacher, and I enjoy working with my students on their writing. I spend a lot of time reading what they write and then giving them suggestions for how to improve it. We only have 2 more months (April and May) and then we are on our summer holiday! I recently got my COVID vaccine, so I am feeling more protected than I was a couple of months ago. Are people in Kenya getting vaccines yet? I hope so. Stay safe, my friend, and I look forward to hearing from you soon!

Aloha,
Marisa
Hi Marisa,

Hi Lilian!

It is always so nice to hear from you. I am glad to hear that you are reading as much as you can, and I can see that your writing is improving as well. I just started reading a new book about people who live in India, and they make a living by recycling garbage. It does not sound like a good way to live, but they cannot go to school to be able to get a better job. How is your family? What do they do for a family? Do you have animals, like cows and goats? What chores do you have to do at home to help your mother? We have chickens at our house, and my children help to feed them. They must also wash the dishes and help prepare food. We all work together. My husband is a scientist. I tell them about my friend Lilian in Kenya. Please take care of yourself. Keep reading, keep washing your hands, and keep wearing your mask!
Hi Marisa,
Hope you are doing good in Hawaii.I do borrow as many books as possible. Not only borrowing the books but also reading. Sincerely speaking,I know just a little about her.Having been informed about her,I will comb every corner looking for her history. We reported back to school on 4th January where we resumed our syllabus as usual. We are adhering to rules of Corona virus for our safety in schools. The going in school is very smooth. We are back at home for a short period and we will be back to school very soon.
Thank you..
Hi Lilian! I'm so glad to hear from you and so glad to hear that you have been able to go to the Kenya Connect library. I know many of the people who work there, like James, Cyrus, Patrick, Esther, and Primma. They are all wonderful people who are there to help you succeed! I hope you borrow as many books as they allow you to borrow. I love reading stories, too. I just finished reading Michelle Obama's biography. Do you know her? She is President Barack Obama's wife. I found her life story fascinating because she and her husband worked so hard. Did you know that she also wants you to succeed? She is very dedicated to supporting girls going to school throughout the world. It is very important to her and to her husband, who's father was from Kenya. I believe he was a Luo. I hope you can go back to school soon. I am sure you will be very happy to see your friends every day. I start teaching this week in Hawaii. Everyone will still be wearing masks and sitting very far apart. It is different but better than trying to learn from home. God bless you and your family. Stay strong and healthy! Keep reading and washing your hands!

Hi Lilian!
I am so glad to hear from you and to hear that you and your family are healthy. Are you wearing masks? We are all wearing masks here in Hawaii, and my students are all learning at home with lessons that I give them over the internet. It is not much fun for them, I am afraid. Are you able to read books right now? I hope so. Please keep reading and writing, and do not give up hope. Best wishes for you and your family.

Hi Lilian!

It was so good to hear from you! Thank you for writing. I love your clarion call. Yes, our school was interrupted this spring because of the coronavirus as well. We are starting classes again in August, although I think it will be very different from school before the pandemic. I hope you and your family are staying healthy. Please take care of yourself, and keep studying hard!

Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.

Notable experiences in my life are, first, passing my standard seven examination and, second, entering secondary school. My most difficult experience was when I started to learn English. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to work hard. I felt proud was when I entered secondary school. My most memorable and happiest thoughts are from when I celebrated at my birthday party. My dream is to be an electrical engineer. I will get there through studying hard and doing well in science subjects. If I had the power to change my country, I would like to improve the electricity supply especially in rural areas because there are shortages of electric power.

The experience that I had early in life was to score good marks in my class, whereby I got good grades which encouraged me to study hard in class. The difficult experience that occurred in my life was an accident on my way back home. I learnt that I should not play again in bad areas. In my life I am proud of myself. I was getting low marks in class but now I have managed to improve a lot. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life is to play football. It exercises my body regularly and hence strengthens my body system. My dream is to become a mechanical engineer. The best way to reach it is through studying hard in school, in physics, mathematics and chemistry. If I had power in my country, I would change the education system of the country so that it helps graduates to depend more on self-employment.
