About

Jackson is the first born child in a family of five children. He comes from Kaliambeu village in Mwala district. Before he joined Mbaani secondary school in 2010 he was in Kaliambeu primary school. His mother is the sole breadwinner of the family and earns a living through doing casual jobs. His father has deserted and neglected the family. Jackson walks to school every day because he cannot afford to pay the boarding fees. He has constantly been sent home for missing school fees but he is determined to achieve his goals in the future. His mother has never been able to afford any of Jackson's school fees since he joined school in January 2011; thus, Jackson has a large outstanding fee balance. Jackson is quite bright in class and hopes to get a good education to be able to support his family in the future.

Hi Alicia,

I am so happy to read your journal. Thank you so much for your encouraging words. We have opened school for the second term of the year. This being my final year in high school i am focused and working hard. I have been thinking of my future after high school. I want to attain good grades to enable me join university. I still want to study law.

I am always proud of Kenya Connect. I know that through Kenya Connect and TSF i have had the privilege to go on with my studies. I will always pray for all who made my stay in school comfortable.

You are always welcome again in Kenya and more so Wamunyu.

wishing you all the best.

Jackson.
Hi Jackson,

My name is Alicia Wrenn and I am the current Executive Director of Kenya Connect. I talk with James frequently and of course have had the pleasure of visiting Wamunyu and some of our partner schools.

It sounds like you are working hard. You are just about there in terms of a major accomplishment in your life and one that really prepares you well for either the workplace or postsecondary education. Have you been thinking through what your next steps are? I think I remember that your interests were history and the law? Both sound like noble areas of study.

I know the staff at Kenya Connect and TSF are really proud of you and wish you a strong finish to your senior year.

Best Regards,

Alicia Wrenn

Hi Jaclyn,

Thank you so much for your journal. I am glad to talk to someone like you. My school term is progressing well. We are currently on a mid-term break and we shall resume back tomorrow Friday. My dream to become a lawyer was motivated by the need to help poor people seek legal redress. I am working extra hard in school to achieve this. Hoping to hear from you.

Jackson
Hi Jackson,

My name is Jaclyn, and I am a student at Brown University who works with The School Fund. I just wanted to introduce myself and see how you are doing. Hope your school term is off to a good start! I noticed from your profile that you would like to become a lawyer. That's an awesome goal to have! I also want to become a lawyer. What made you decide on this career?

Hope to hear from you soon!

Jaclyn

Jackson
you are going to have a good future
Hallo Christi,

Thank you for writing back to me. I am glad that we have come for a mid-term break. The first half of the term was busy with academics and co-curricular activities. I was part of our school soccer team. Before we broke for mid-term we did an exam and we will be getting the results immediately we return back to school.

Congratulations for going back to school. I know you will be able to conquer all challenges that come your way. I wish you all the best in law school.

Jackson
Hi Jackson,
I wish I could taste them too! They sound really good. How is the second term going? Is it very different from the first term, or have your teachers and classes stayed pretty much the same?

I will start in law school in September, and I am looking forward to attending classes again. I will learn how to create a contract and how to read a legal brief in the fall. It sounds intimidating now, because I have never done it before, but I hope to learn quickly.

Looking forward to hearing from you again soon.

All the best,
Christi
Hi Christi,
We are in the rain season and everything looks green. We do not experience extreme temperatures and our weather rotates from wet and dry seasons. We are now back to school for the second term of the year. I am determined to work hard to continue improving in my grades.

Cow peas are sweet especially when green. I wish you could taste them.

All the best
Hi Jackson,
We're experiencing spring right now which is my favorite season. The flowers are coming out of the ground and the leaves are coming back to the trees. It is also getting warm enough so that I don't have to wear a big heavy coat outside and I can ride my bicycle around town again. Does the weather change very much from season to season where you live? Here in Boston it snows heavily in the winter and gets so hot it is uncomfortable to be outside in the summer.

It's wonderful to hear that you're expecting a bumper harvest! I wish I could taste cow peas too. Perhaps the next time I am in Kenya I will have to find them. Are they

Good luck in school! Congratulations on your performance on your examination!

All the best,
Christi
Hi Christi
Hope you have been doing fine in TSF. We have come to the end of the first term. The term was busy with class work and extra curricular activities. We did an exam and I performed well. During the vacation I will help my parents in household chores and also weeding for the crops. This year the rains are good and we anticipate for a bumper harvest. Which season are you experiencing now?

Experiences in my life are when I failed my examination during primary education and also when my parents failed to pay food for me. My difficult experiences in my life are when my parents have insufficient enough money to pay for all my basic needs at school such as food and other school contributions. The thing that makes me feel so proud of myself is when I succeeded in joining O-level education. This makes me feel that I will, I must, I can do everything. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life will be to reach my dream of being a doctor general so as I can help other people in society. My future dream is to be a GOOD surgical doctor. After me reaching my dream, I will give back help to my society and family, but also to WEF. I need to work hard upon reaching my dream in my life. Once I get chance to have power of changing anything in country, I will improve the education system by converting science subjects from theory to practical. In most of our schools, they teach science subjects mostly theoretically. I will start from there because as we know education is the key to every success in our people.

Notable experiences in my life are, first, passing my standard seven examination and, second, entering secondary school. My most difficult experience was when I started to learn English. I have learned that if you want to do something, you have to work hard. I felt proud was when I entered secondary school. My most memorable and happiest thoughts are from when I celebrated at my birthday party. My dream is to be an electrical engineer. I will get there through studying hard and doing well in science subjects. If I had the power to change my country, I would like to improve the electricity supply especially in rural areas because there are shortages of electric power.

The experience that I had early in life was to score good marks in my class, whereby I got good grades which encouraged me to study hard in class. The difficult experience that occurred in my life was an accident on my way back home. I learnt that I should not play again in bad areas. In my life I am proud of myself. I was getting low marks in class but now I have managed to improve a lot. The most memorable and happiest thing in my life is to play football. It exercises my body regularly and hence strengthens my body system. My dream is to become a mechanical engineer. The best way to reach it is through studying hard in school, in physics, mathematics and chemistry. If I had power in my country, I would change the education system of the country so that it helps graduates to depend more on self-employment.
